FWST: TCU's Maponga declares for NFL Draft

TCU defensive end Stansly Maponga is leaving to enter the NFL Draft and will not play his senior season. Maponga announced the decision on his Twitter account Monday evening.

"So blessed and thankful to be in this position," Maponga said via Twitter. "First of all, thank you Lord, family, coaches, teammates, and fans ... I'll always have y'all in my heart."

Maponga missed two games with a foot injury in 2012, and needed postseason surgery, coach Gary Patterson said a month ago. ...

At best we only had him one more year. In college football you have them play for four years max, they they are gone. We have a bunch of guys that GP says have great talent at that position, so we will see. Only thing that worries me is going against LSU without Maponga. Time for the others to grow up fast.

I think, at this point, the team's future looks a lot brighter than Mapongas.

No degree.

Less than stellar junior year because of injury.

Probably a little sour over all of the accolades that Devonte received

Not my intent to degrade Stansly, but I think his decision is a foolish one. I hope he proves me wrong. I will be cheering for him all the way.

And for the record, I think Boyce made a wise and logical choice. His future is bright, regardless of what happens in the NFL.

Coach Patterson was quoted as saying that 20 NFL scouts advised Stansly to stay for his senior season....he chose not to anyway. You got to believe there is more to his decision than we will ever find out.

Anyway.....sincere best wishes for continued success to Stansly and thanks for three great years.

On the bright side, at least we'll have fewer late hit penalties next year... I believe he ended w/ 2X the number of 15 yarders versus sacks this season. That said, wish he'd hung around another year.

I feel like he could have raised his stock back up because this season he looked bad due to injury. I wish him luck but don't understand the decision.

Once I had a client who explained "my children are very thoughtful--sometimes they just don't think very well."

I think that applys to Stansly
poor decision by the kid IMO
nevertheless I wish him well.

We often say (rightly) that a guy ought not to go into the draft, but the decision is tough. The NFL minimum in 2013 is $405,000. According to the NFLPA, the average drafted rookie salary is $1.75M, but most players drafted after the second round don't make that. According to NFL Communications, the average rookie career is about 3.5 years, but the average jumps to 6 years if you make the opening day roster. Most playersbelieve that their agents can get them a lot closer to $1M than $405K, plus they get all the perks of a professional ball player. So look at it this way, three years at minimum gets you over $1.2M. Even with your degree, how many years would you need to work to make that much? Factor in the risk of Senior year injury, and the fact that you can always go back and get your degree later. Touhg call.

What they don't understand is $450K minus nearly 50% in taxes (or more, depending on where you live) with an NFL lifestyle, doesn't go very far. 3.5 years of that, on average, with a lifestyle and spending to go with it, and you can see why 75% of these guys are broke within 10 years.

The call isn't as tough if you're not likely to be drafted or make a roster.
