FWST: TCU's defense seems primed for greatness next season

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Devonte Fields was sitting alone, one of four TCU players chosen to sit at a podium for the Horned Frogs' media day Thursday morning in a ballroom at the JW Marriott Camelback Inn Resort and Spa.

Fields, The Associated Press's Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and the league's Defensive Freshman of the Year, was still trying to take in what has been a whirlwind year for the Arlington Martin graduate.

"This is crazy for me, too," said Fields, who earned the right to represent the Frogs along with quarterback Trevone Boykin, safety Sam Carter and cornerback Jason Verrett on raised podiums next to a ballroom wall. "I did interviews in high school, but it was nothing like this at all. I really don't think it compares. It really doesn't." ...

Good story. Hidden in there is that Boyce, Verrett, and Maponga have filed the necessary paperwork in case they decide to declare for the draft. The writer made it sound like they were excited to return though. Hope that is the case.

The Frog defense is going to top 10 or top 5 in the nation if Verret and Stansley come back. I think they will come back. The article made it sound like the possibility of them coming back is very high.

"I see greatness, really," Maponga said. "We're so young, but how we just caught up to stuff and how we approached everything through this season and all the obstacles we had to overcome. I was surprised how we overcame everything and just stuck together. I'm proud of my team and we're going to be something else next year."

Crazier things have happened... but I would be absolutely stunned if BeastMode90 leaves after this season. Of courses... he follows that up with this...

"I'm not thinking about that right now," Maponga said. "We'll see where it goes."

It's always good to see where they would go if the draft. I am confident they are all coming back.

Maponga needs to come back for his senior year as his NFL draft stock probably isn't that high right now.

I don't know if Boyce has a realistic shot at improving his draft stock if he comes back next year and since he has graduated from TCU won a Rose Bowl, I would wish him well if he decided to go pro. If I were him, I'd be intregued to play a senior season with Casey Pachall throwing him the ball.

Verrett is a beast and he may allready be a high draft choice. It remains to be seen if he will come back but we are all hoping that he does.

I kind of disagree and think Boyce has the most to gain by staying. He had a pretty lackluster year, and I think he has the ability to be a 1st round or high 2nd round draft pick. I think he's looking at 3rd round at the very best right now.

If Verrett left I wouldn't say it's a bad decision on his part. His stock is pretty high right now... although with another solid year he could solidify a 1st round pick.

No way Maponga leaves unless he just needs the money now.
