Darrell Browder was watching from his Arlington home Wednesday night as his alma mater shocked No. 5 Kansas.

Browder, the Horned Frogs' all-time leading scorer, doesn't make it out to a lot of games, but no one has ever spent more time on the floor at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.

TCU will honor Browder today, retiring the No. 24 jersey he wore from 1979-1983, during halftime of the Frogs' 3 p.m. game against West Virginia at DMC.

Browder, 52, heard ESPN announcers say Wednesday's upset was the biggest in school history, but he recalls beating Houston's Phi Slamma Jamma team that went to the Final Four in 1982, and upsetting sixth-ranked Arkansas in overtime in the Southwest Conference tournament in 1983. ...

I saw every home game he ever played and quite a few of his road games -- he was the best. He could have scored 40 points a game if Killingsworth had let him, but he was a complete player.

He famously knocked off Rice and A&M with Jordanesque last-second buckets, the A&M shot -- from waaaaaay downtown -- sent the Frogs to the SWC tourney in San Antonio in '82.

The '82-'83 Frogs are one of the best teams in TCU history. Even though they were only 9-7 in conference -- it may have been the strongest group of teams the SWC ever had -- they finished 23-11 and made it three rounds into the NIT.

The SWC had stars on every team that year -- even Baylor had Terry Teagle and Rice had Ricky Pierce! Not to mention Phi Slamma Jamma, Darrell Walker, Claude Riley, Clarence Swannegan and TCU's own Doug Arnold.

This honor is long overdue.

After TCU beat Arizona State at ASU in the 1983 NIT a reporter asked DB something like, what was it like playing against Byron Scott one the best players on the West Coast that he may not have heard much about. DB replied something like, they ain't never heard of Smooth the Groove neither! (DB was referring to himself of course)

Browder: Superman for sure. And a pretty good comedian.
