TCU, Texas A&M to revive basketball rivalry at Dickies Arena next season

By Drew Davison

TCU and Texas A&M are nearing an agreement to renew an old Southwest Conference rivalry that has been dormant for the last 24 years.

TCU athletic director Jeremiah Donati confirmed that TCU and Texas A&M are nearing an agreement to play a neutral-site game at Fort Worth’s Dickies Arena next season followed by another neutral-site game at the Toyota Center in Houston for the 2021-22 season.

The date for the Dickies Arena game isn’t known yet, but is expected to be in early-to-mid December.

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, there were a couple of seasons when TCU won the SWC championship and A&M was sometimes a game behind...the reverse happened in the 1980s....The last regular season game in 1971 at DMC featured a chair-throwing, punch-throwing brawl (TCU won the fight IIRC, and the game as well)....And while all that was going on, it had snowed a couple of inches....My Aggie friends have always been condescending toward TCU to the point that they go into deep sack cloth and ashes mode when they lose any competition to the Frogs....Maybe that's the rivalry that is being renewed....

A bunch of us at the brawl game just about got trampled by 6’8” 270 lb DT Larry Dibbles and the rest of the football team as they decided to assist the BB team. Several of us thought it’d be fun to grab one of the sanitarium orderly deaf signing cheer leader’s white shirt, but the FWPD riot squad put an end to that. Good times...

FYI for the young’uns, Dibble, Hodges Mitchell and every other black football except Charlie Davis (arguably the most talented of the group) boycotted the hiring of Billy Tohill and eventually left TCU. The second event in the building black cloud that hovered over TCU football well into the 90s.
