TCU survives scare from Air Force, pulling away late for 65-54 victory

By Drew Davison

Kevin Samuel wasn’t alive the last time a TCU basketball player opened the season with three consecutive double-doubles.

But he accomplished that feat on Monday night.

Samuel scored a team-high 19 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to carry TCU to a 65-54 victory over Air Force at Schollmaier Arena.

It marked his third double-double of the season, becoming the program’s first player to open with three straight since Kurt Thomas in 1994-95.

Bane occasionally has a game like this. Fortunately it tends to be a one and done and he is back to his Baneness.

A small sample of only 3 games but Samuel and RJ, have definitely improved with Samuel avg. 16 pts. game this season vs 9 last yr. and RJ 15 vs 6. Big step up for both and RJ's all around game has improved, especially his defense and passing and his lobs to Samuel have been spot on. Team may be a little better than what we thought.

Big teaching moment at the end of the first half. TCU scored with about 2 seconds left, AFA got off a shot from way out at the buzzer for 3. The TCU players all had assumed that the half was over and nobody was close to or facing the shooter. Instead of a 14 point lead we had an 11 point lead.
  1. Don't assume there is not enough time for your opponent to score. Play defense until you hear the buzzer.
  2. Don't assume you can't score with only a couple of seconds left. Look at what your coach did against Texas. And what AFA did against you.

RJ was actually standing up next to him with his hand up, which is all you want in the case to avoid fouls. That was just a lucky shot.

See USA/Russian Olympic game 1972.

truth be told the usa did properly defend that end of game multiple times only to have the eastern bloc officials give the soviet union yet another chance and even then it took a push off for them to score and finally "win" the game.

good thing iba was the usa coach and not knight because i am fairly certain bobby would have started another world war with how that whole thing played out in munich

RJ’s improvement is very encouraging. And the freshmen will improve. Dixon wants the program to get older, so this will be a transition year, but I see tons of promise.

rj inside of 15 feet has become a very effective offensive as he has gotten stronger on the drive, handles the ball so much better, has shown good vision on his passes, and a nice touch around the basket.
