Josh Watson had one of those seasons in 2017. The kind that can cripple a hitter's psyche.

The TCU slugger struggled at the plate despite his team's success, finishing with one home run and 13 extra-base hits a year after hitting 11 homers and collecting 28 extra-base hits as a freshman out of Arlington Martin in 2016.

He continued to struggle offensively during summer league play in Cape Cod.

You think perhaps he meant “blew open”. Likely an editing issue rather than writer.

At least I hope he knows better.

It's grammatically okay as the clause should be attached to it's object -- "game". It's just awkward as hell to read and distracting from the intent and flow of the article. So many easier constructions available. But I will say that it made me wonder for just a second if the Frogs had won the game. I was flying back from Chicago so I wasn't able to follow the game.

It's still a very good article covering one of the most important early elements of this season IMO.
