FWST: TCU set to hire Auburn assistant as receivers coach

TCU is set to hire former Auburn running backs coach Curtis Luper as its wide receivers coach, two sources said.

Luper is the father of Cameron Echols-Luper, a recruit who announced he committed to TCU over Texas A&M several days ago.

Luper was Auburn's running backs coach and recruiting coordinator since 2009. He attended Sherman High School before playing three seasons at Oklahoma State. After five years working as an air traffic controller for the U.S. Army, he played his last year of eligibility in 1993 at Stephen F. Austin. He graduated in 1996 and earned his masters degree from SFA in 1998. Before Auburn, he coached running backs at Oklahoma State for four seasons.

Luper replaces Trey Haverty, who took the same job at Texas Tech last month. -- Stefan Stevenson

Not really knowledgeable in these things, but is it common for something like a RB coach to switch to a another position coach like this?

as an example

coach Anderson switched from WR coach to RB coach when Coach Burns was hired to be the WR coach... he replaced fuente, who was RB coach and switched to QB coach when fuente was announced OC after coach schultz's departure

it's not that big of a deal

Few things-
1- This sounds fishy. "Oh, kid won't sign with TCU unless you give his dad a job". Oh well, let the haters hate.

2- AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, If his dad is employed by TCU, cant Echols-Luper get to attend school at TCU for free and not have to use one of our football scholarships?? Ala, Ryan Christian?

DING DING DING! We have a winner!

I like Luper's recruiting experience in the deep south... let's land some SEC country D-Lineman!

I think there is a waiting period for this to be a possibility...one maybe two years...

I'd just prefer to have one of the best RB coaches in the nation actually coach running backs, not receivers.

Still, CL has major recruiting chops, and I hope we can take advantage of his contacts in SEC territory to further expand our recruiting efforts in LA and GA.

I hear ya. However, he obviously wouldn't have taken the job if he wasn't comfortable with it. I'm sure they've got it worked out just fine, and like you said, I'm glad to have his recruiting chops on our staff.

1. What I am hearing is he was hired to be the RB coach. A current member in the staff will move to coaching LB's so there will be some shuffling. Also, the word is ."a high school HC is going to be hired to coach receivers. We shoul know by the end of the week if this is true.

2. Luper will be on scholarship

You see it a lot with coaches that aspire to be offensive coordinators. For example, in the NFL Edgar Bennett is currently the Packers' wide receivers coach. Before that he was their running backs coach (A natural spot for him since he was a RB for the Packers for many years). He's hitting on different areas of the offense to gain experience so that he can eventually become an OC. And given the state of the Packers' WR corp, he seems to be doing a pretty good job, even though he's a former RB.

Used to be 1 year for full 100% discount o tuition only. Not fees or room and board.

Now it's 6 months for 50%, 3 years for 100%

Yup 3 years. I spoke with my wife and a current prof about this. 4-5 years pre-college, my wife will be applying for every job at TCU.
