FWST: TCU neighborhoods grapple over parking cars in yards during TCU football games

FORT WORTH -- Neighborhoods around TCU are trying to get a grip on the latest issue connected to the dearth of convenient parking for Frogs football games: People letting fans park in their yards, often charging them $40-$50 or more.

A city ordinance bans parking in front yards and unscreened side yards but allows the City Council to approve exceptions. The city has allowed homeowners near Colonial Country Club to park cars in their yards during the annual PGA golf tournament.

Homeowners near TCU who park cars in their yards for Frogs games want the same exception. But city officials say they haven't found any record of the council approving an exception for the Colonial, throwing that long-honored practice open to re-examination.

For Saturday's season ender against Oklahoma at Amon Carter Stadium, police and code compliance officials say they've agreed not to enforce the ordinance. ...

Zero clue if I wasn't in compliance with the new stadium or if rules or different now or whatever - came up for the game against UVA and parked my car in the neighborhood across Berry St pretty much facing the frat/soroity houses, forgot what street it was, probably got around campus around 8:00am. No temporary no parking signs or anything and didn't pay a dime to park. Assumed I was all right.

Living off campus the final years of college and whenever I have come up for games since then, never have parked my car around tempoary no parking signs for games - I almost always had a plan to park my car in the neighborhood behind University Dr just before the Arts building hours before the game. They never have or had temp. no parking signs there - worked every time.

Parking is an issue and thus I have no problem with people using their yards as temporary parking lots. It is only 6 games a year.

Some bitty or geiser living around the stadium has decided that want to make a fuss and I willing to bet this probably reason the city is even discussing it.

I bet the Colonial Country Club community will be just deeelighted with this sleeping dog being kicked.

Anyway, the more influential friends they have, the better the chance of city permission for yard-parking for TCU home games. The folks in the neighborhoods better hope that parking is all that is done in nearby front yards.

If it's your yard you should be allowed to park a space shuttle in it if you want to.

No, it's a bad code. It does not protect property rights. That is my political rant for today.

I've paid $40 for the Tech game. The guy wanted $60 but we got him down. Kudos to these folks. However, they need to be GOING to the games instead of playing parking lot attendant. I can't believe how many people who live in that area don't support the team on gameday. Wouldn't you feel like you have to go?

I swear people have no clue how to mind their own business.

And we have GOT to get a parking garage. Parking around TCU is awful and that is not just on game days.

Ticket Exchange Pass
For the Tech game I paid $25 to park in a yard near the Kroger. When we returned to the car there was a $75 ticket on the window. The cop circled the citation for the front yard parking but entered the code for another violation that cost $100. When I contacted the court to see if I could fight it, they said no dice because the fine is based on the entered code and not the circled violation. Better yet, since I travel in for home games the ticket was paid by the rental car company before I was able to get in touch with the court. Since the payment was made after the 14 day window and with the fees National charged me to pay the ticket, it cost me about $160 to park for the Tech game.

Verdict: I got screwed by the FWPD.

Crazy that just a few years ago you could get to the game 30 minutes before kick off and park just down the street in the residential area for free. Walk up to the ticket office and buy a ticket with a good view without any issue. Feels good to be a Frog fan!

There is plenty of free parking on the streets. It requires getting to the game a bit early to get it or parking a bit further out and having to walk longer.

I've never paid to park either, Top - but our little group doesn't mind walking a long distance.

Plus, when you've parked some distance out - there's no traffic jam when you drive away.

We've never had to settle for any further than a block or so north of Bluebonnet Circle.

No assault factory on campus. I will fervently oppose the building of any parking garages.

Parking is tough 5-6 days per year. And, it's not THAT tough.

Yeah, not like you are getting out of the neighborhoods anytime soon after a game. Might as well walk some.

You have no idea, everytime I'm over there the atmosphere is like a flea market.
