TCU navigating issue that befell Indiana basketball & Penn St. with Joe Paterno

You never want to be the guy who replaces the guy, but Sonny Dykes willingly signed on to join a group of coaches that includes Mike Davis, Bill O’ Brien and Jimmy Johnson, too.

Replacing a legend is a no-win job, even if you lead your team to the national title game. The only exception is winning back-to-back Super Bowls, which is guaranteed to help people embrace your presence.

The start to Dykes’ fifth season as TCU’s football coach is going almost as well as a road construction project; impatient and irrational fans are wondering aloud, When is this thing going to be done? It also has them wondering if it should bring back the coach whose tenure put this school back on the map nationally.

BS. Dykes was hired to stabilize and resurrect a faltering program. He took the team to the NC game his first season. So it's on him. He was hired and is paid a lot of money to at minimum compete for Big 12 titles and make the playoffs. It is not about Patterson or how the program was 10 years ago.

Like everywhere he has been, Dykes' time is running out.

Either you don’t read the board or you’re just being dishonest. The Jimmy v. Barry debate is a staple around here.

I’m not here to defend subpar performance but I’m gonna keep calling bull••it on nonsense

Gentlemen, Muck writes what he does not to make a point, but to enrage readers. It's the same schtick that SportsTalk guys use: Say something outrageous, and watch the phone lines light up. In Muck's case, write something infuriating, and watch the clicks pile up. He isn't serious, and he doesn't care about accuracy or fact. All he cares about are clicks.

Don't give it to him.

This. He’s an absolute one-trick pony, and it’s not even his trick. He does it because Gallo did it with the Cowboys to great success- because Gallo knew that fans loved the Cowboys almost as much as they loved [ Finebaum ]ting on the Cowboys. . . Enough to fistfight you in the Cefco parking lot over it, and damn sure enough to buy your rag to read it or tune in your station to hear it. What Gallo couldn’t share with Muck tho, was one iota of talent or skill in telling a story.

dykes' situation seems a little like lancelot's up at lawrence. both took over rosters built by the prior guy and won big early. now both seem somewhat bedeviled.

indiana basketball has never fully recovered from canning bobby. but penn state has been good to near great post jopa. not sure campbell will keep that going.

Let’s not forget history. All you guys ran Gary P out of town as well. Lay off of Sonny. He took us to a natty and with enough time, will again! Instead, focus on the support we provide Sonny. He gets criticized more than another other HOF-caliber coach and is provided less financial support and is held to an unreasonable standard. Give the man some space and time. And extend him now before we have to pay more when he turns this thing around next week vs BYU! Let’s storm the field together…!!!

Sonny's goose was cooked here the moment he hired Tapefingers.....He had all that goodwill of the fanbase after the Natty run and immediately threw it all away for an OC who has failed against top 25 teams at every stop he has been at. Everyone in the athletic department tried to talk him out of it but he did it anyway...He has nobody to blame but himself for his current situation.

Now, the same people who flamed and flamed and flamed on Briles want the new OC fired and him brought back.

Gallo’s shenanigans were cheeky and fun. Muck’s shenanigans are cruel and tragic.

Agree 100%....the hiring of Briles was a huge mistake. Sonny was on top of the world after that first year. He could have hired any of a number of topnotch OC's who would have loved to come to TCU. Instead, he locked in on Briles before really checking out anyone else. I do not dislike Dykes like so many on this board, but he has clearly demonstrated that he is not going to lead us out of our mess.

I also blame this on Donati for not stepping in and vetoing that hire. Sonny had many voices telling him to look for another OC.....not just voices in the athletic department. Boschini should have stepped in and vetoed the deal if Donati would not veto it.

Again, lack of spine up and down the line has cost us dearly. There is no united commitment to Dykes or to TCU athletics right now. We threw away the best opportunity to solidify our athletic program since the Rose Bowl.....and we blew it. Instead, we are hoping to find a few crumbs at the bottom of the Big 12 because half the league has passed us by.

Please. That's just insulting.

No one wanted the rat [ "illegitimate Baylor boy" ] to begin with, because 1.) Grotesque history, and 2.) Mediocre results. As noted, Sonny cashed in all his Goodwill on The Whelp because that's what Sonny does: He plays favorites based on relationships, and not performance.

As far as performance goes, he can't judge that either...

That is an absolutely irresponsible headline. Holy cow. Knight was fired because he was hitting kids. Paterno was fired because his staff was doing the opposite. Patterson was let go because he...wasn't winning enough football games in a changing landscape.
Yes, the headline is irresponsible and click-baity. But the story is not about why legendary coaches were fired. It's about their successors failing to continue winning traditions.

I think the August locker room sucker punch, once more thoroughly investigated, could push things closer to PSU, IU BB.
