After what TCU men's tennis coach Dave Borelli called a tough season of close losses, the Horned Frogs swept Air Force 7-0 in their final home match of the season Friday at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
"I really, literally, think that if we had closed the five [close] matches, I really think we'd be a top-30 team," Borelli said.
TCU won all three doubles matches to earn the doubles point, then added singles victories by Marius Cirstea over Taylor Soster, 6-2, 6-0, and Zach Nichols over Austin Francis, 6-0, 6-2, before junior Emanuel Brighiu provided the clinching point with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over freshman Lance Wilhelm.
TCU also earned singles victories by Sören Goritzka, Kelubia Mabatah and Santiago Centeno.
In doubles, Brighiu and junior Christopher Price, ranked No. 67 nationally, played a fast-paced match from the start and defeated 6-foot-8 senior Brett Rodgers and junior Taylor Soster 8-6. Nichols and Paul Chappell defeated Francis and Wilhelm 8-3, and Goritzka and junior Cameron Nash defeated Alex Beaussart and Sam Barnes 8-4.
No. 63-ranked TCU improved to 9-10 and 3-2 Mountain West, while Air Force fell to 10-10 and 0-5 in MWC.
TCU wraps up the conference regular-season schedule Sunday against New Mexico before facing Texas A&M on Friday. The MWC Championships begin April 27 in Las Vegas.
"We've been trying to work on more conditioning these next few weeks to give us an edge going into Vegas for the conference tournament," Borelli said. "In fact, the guys were a little sore complaining about it, but I don't care right now. The regular season isn't the issue now for me, it's the conference tournament."
Borelli also said the team will be perceived as the underdog this year in the tournament, but Brighiu isn't buying it..
"We're going to go there to do our best and play our best," Brighiu said. "I still believe we're the best team in the conference, so I believe we could win and should win if we play with our best abilities in the conference."
