FWST: TCU men can't catch Houston after slow start

Houston had an answer for everything Tuesday night.

Each time TCU found its offense, the Cougars responded with a flurry of baskets and ran away with a 54-48 victory in front of an announced crowd of 3,837 at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.

TaShawn Thomas led Houston (6-2) with 19 points and 12 rebounds and Joseph Young scored 12 points, including a high-arching running jumper in the lane that gave the Cougars an 11-point lead with less than four minutes remaining.

Kyan Anderson scored 12 of his TCU-high 20 points in the final 4:31, but the Frogs (6-3) couldn't stop Houston. Especially to start both halves. ...

I cannot understand why or how TCU has fielded teams for 12 years that have struggled to score 50-60 points a game.

I was disappointed by our failure to block out and rebound on the defensive end. Don't know if the stats will support my observation but lots of second-chance opportunities for the coogs don't even happen if we just get a butt on somebody and keep them off the boards.

Like i said last week, no one can create their own shot. Kyan gets absolutely no help. He and Abron are the only Big 12 type players we have and you see what happens when they have an off night. Nice game from McKinney, but it's going to be tough in conference play when our big men play anchored to the floor. With no bounce, it's going to be easy to score over them when we play teams that are actually good at basketball. We are in desperate need of a perimeter shooter (I realize this is exacerbated by Fields' absence) and a slasher. I will say that these guys play hard and it was refreshing to see some charges being taken since we haven't taken a charge in about a decade. They appear to be well coached and smart. Unfortunately, they just aren't very good at basketball.

Speaking of Abron, why did he play so few minutes last night? He sat a lot in both halves. I don't get it. Clearly there isn't an injury.

UH had a lot of third-chance opportunities as well.

The stats support your opinion. We gave them 15 offensive rebounds and that is way too many. McKinney was the only Frog who was interested in getting rebounds last night.

He had two fouls in the first half so he spend a good chunk of time on the bench. In the second half we were getting more out of McKinney, though they did play together some.

Yeah, allowed way too many off. rebounds.

Due to getting off work too late to take the family, I stayed home. Despite last night's poor performance, I like Johnson's coaching and I look forward to watching the team improve.

The team needs our support this year. Let's start by showing up and cheering them on in beating Tech.

I thought the Frogs played tough last night. After that horrific start to the game they they clawed their way back into the game and had a chance.

I think we have a pretty good coach in charge of the Frogs. I'm 100% on board with CTJ.

Can someone explain the frogs' offensive scheme? It seems they run the same play a lot (meaning forwards and guards slashing across the baseline and setting picks to try and free up a man inside or by cutting across the lane in the front court). Houston on the other hand slashed virtically to the basket from the top of the key in their offensive sets which seemed to create more shots in the paint.

I am not that familiar with how the offense works so I appreciate clarificaitons on this. It doesn't seem we vary it much, but this may be a personnel problem. If the picks don't produce open shots across the baseline, we are left with outside jumpers as the shot clock winds down. We do on occasion try and dump it inside to Abron or McKinney on the low post, but not very much. Most of the time the offense is driven by movement across the baseline.

I've got a fairly substantial wager (in my world, at least) with a TTech alum friend that we finish ahead of them in bball this year, so that'd be lovely.
