TCU football: Who the Horned Frogs lost and gained in the transfer portal

The transfer portal officially closed Friday, bringing to a close a busy recruiting season for TCU football.

The Horned Frogs weren’t as active as some other teams in the portal, bringing in a smaller class of fewer than 15 signees, but that was by design.

TCU mostly avoided losing any quality pieces in the portal, which limited the program’s need to go out and sign a large portal class, as other Big 12 teams including West Virginia and Iowa State had to do.

As the portal season winds down, here’s a look at the players TCU added and lost during the transfer window:

It's pretty interesting that 8 of the 12 kids who left TCU remain unsigned.

I hope somebody out there is doing some analysis of portal entries to see how many actually improve their situation.
According to Chat GPT:

Current Transfer Portal Status

  • Total NCAA football players who entered the portal: ~10,965.
  • **Players still active in the portal (i.e., not yet signed with a new team): ~6,671.

Breakdown by Division (still unsigned)

  • FBS players: ~1,619 still looking.
  • FCS players: ~1,782 still looking.
  • Division II & III players: ~3,270 still looking.

Key Context

  • This snapshot reflects the portal situation after the January 2026 window closed—many players are still waiting to be picked up or to commit to a new school.
  • The portal does not require players to sign immediately, so some remain listed as “active” even if talks are ongoing.
In summary: roughly 6,671 college football players who entered the transfer portal are still unsigned with a new team as of the latest tracking.

Just like those border line type that leave early or did, for the NFL only to see a FA contract. This college gig can be turned into major money maker for some in that category!

Most of the kids in the portal across all sports don't want to be in it. The portal was supposed to be to help student athletes move to a new school because coaches were leaving for new jobs. The coaches could easily move, but the athletes in most cases had to sit out a year.

Now the coaches are using the portal against the student athletes. I would say in baseball alone, that approximately 80% of the kids in the portal got forced out by the coaching staffs.

Only the top of athletes are benefiting from this flawed system.

They are chasing dollars most of them. A lot are seeking opportunities, gain playing time even if at a lower level.

But I think for most it does not benefit them.

I think (hope) we have made some improvements to our OL which was key.

All of this. Everybody acts like this is greedy players pushing for better spots or benefits driving the high number of portal entries. But in reality most of these players were told to leave and had no choice but to try the portal.

prior to the portal, these were players that simply fell out of college sports quietly.

Agree. Although I would say some of these players fell out. Many of them were retained because they couldn't be replaced as easy before the portal. Some of those retained got some playing time.

Craig is an overall upgrade at QB over Hoover. I don’t like losing Palmer but we’ll have RB’s led by Payne and Denman. The key will be newcomers on D and the OL. So it remains to be seen.
