On June 8, 2009, Matt Carpenter played his final game for TCU, and he figured the final out concluded his career as a baseball player. He had not hired an agent.

He had not talked to a scout. He had earned his degree. He was 24. He was set to pursue a career coaching college baseball.

It’s June 2025, and Carpenter recently announced his retirement after his 14-year career in the major leagues. He lives in Fort Worth with his wife and their two young children. “I was a major league player for 14 years,” he said this week in a phone interview. “That number still just doesn’t feel real.”

I recall a story that things weren't going well for Carp I believe his sophomore year and Schloss and he had a heart-to-heart. Carp said it turned everything back around for him and he credited Schloss for basically saving his career.

I remember that too. Got himself in shape and worked his butt off. Schloss even yelled “Fat Matt couldn’t catch that” the next year when he’d turned it around.

He took it to heart to the point where when he got invited to MLB spring training he was already there in the morning working out before Tony LaRussa arrived. He worked his way into his success and couldn’t have been more deserving of the career he had. All time great Frog to me.
