FWST: Renowned former TCU football coach reportedly preparing to take Big Ten job

The other gigs he's taken since departing TCU all looked awkward--influence-without-power stopovers. This one looks right. He and Riley know each other, and he can lean into the job without being seen as an internal threat and without it being career rehab. L.A. is a great place to live for those with money, and his bent toward player development can focus on prepping guys for the NFL.

But as Wex and others have said, staff composition will be the early indicator.

Being a Head Coach at a Big Time Program is a slog, and I can't imagine that Patterson wants in that barrel again. But, being DC at a Big Time Program means getting back into the gig without all the headaches associated with Head Coach. Besides, Riley's offenses will score points, which makes for a lovely match with a Patterson defense that tends to give up few points.

What remains to be seen is how the Kids Of Today will react to the kind of intensity and drive that a coach like Patterson will demand.
They seem to react to it pretty well at Georgia, TAMU, Texas, Ohio State, Indiana, Miami, ...

I wish him well. But also feel that he's still trying to back his way into a head coaching gig. Didn't work out at UT or Baylor. And I don't understand why an old school coach with an already great legacy wants back into the mess that cfb is today. icbw
Maybe just buying time till

California is not what it was 35 or 40 years ago. I don’t know why Gary would want to pour hard earned money down all the ratholes and sewers there. There’s a reason people of means are fleeing.
coaches are gypsies.

HOWEVER, have not seen a report that this story is real. He could just be doing the special assistant thing to help with defensive planning and development ideas like he did at USC.

GP to USC is real according to a former player who talked to him very recently.
people won't like hearing it, but 2 years at USC and he could easily be an HC at another power 5 school. Klein better have his [ Finebaum ] together at K-State. GP is only a year older than this year's Natty Champ coach. And with a right GM to help make the deals for portal work and NIL, and the right talent scout like Tech, Bama, Indiana, and Ohio State used this year, boom!

Edit: OR
There is the reality that it has been 4 years away. He could be rested. Or he could be bored. But they won't give a darn about his HOF and Legacy at TCU and in football. It's USC. Hollywood stars on the sideline (he's actually become friends with the famous lately) and boosters who demand it all. He saw that at Texas and said he got a better view of what a program like that takes. That may have really set his appetite.
