Gary Patterson built TCU football through methods now unwelcome in sports | Opinion

Gary Patterson’s exit was not just the finale of an era for TCU, but another shovel of dirt on an eon of coaching.

In the final months of his regime, administrators pleaded with him that the methods of barking, and sometimes belittling players (and staffers), could be disastrous in the age of the transfer portal. GP is no dummy, and he would often tell staffers that he was a theater major at Kansas State.

The idea was that no one could be too sure if his sideline theatrics was a case of Gary Patterson lobbying for an Academy Award, or Gary Patterson lobbying for a ticket to an asylum.

But are Nick Saban’s antics not welcome in today’s climate too?
Exactly. Nick, evolved and hires effective coaches to do their jobs. Is Nick still a hard ass, absolutely.

You can’t dog cuss everyone on the field and not produce. Pretty sure that’s been an understanding long before this “new” climate.

What changed was offenses figuring out GP’s defense and GP’s inability to change and hire good coaches.

“Think about us as parents and the worries that come along with our kids at that age,” (former lineman J.W.) Wilson added. “The tragedies, the middle of the night phone calls, the heartbreaking losses, the life-changing wins, the marriages, the birth of kids, the constant pressure to keep the grades up, the disgruntled peers on social media, the knee-jerk fans on social media. He lived it here 24 hours a day, seven days a week for 21 years. He wasn’t a perfect person, but he was ours and he gave us his heart and soul."

I think JW is a great example of a former player that has grown to appreciate what GP did for him and the team beyond the field as JW has gotten older and started a family and a career

He has a great son that is driven to succeed and that comes from JW - who was highly influenced by GP to learn to be the best you can be

Nick still has pretty good control over his team and the players are all completley bought into how he operates so they are ok with him coaching in this style. If the day ever comes when he does lose that "buy in" and control then he will have to make some changes or you will start to hear complaints or start seeing videos posted about anything he does that is deemed "out of line". As long as the players are bought into that type of culture it's not a problem but when the players aren't bought in then it becomes a problem quickly. Plus winning....winning always helps.

Mac has parlayed this situation into 6 weeks of columns. I read this one, which wasn't too bad, but I'm quite tired of it.
And until that BIG announcement is made, he'll keep doing it. And then find a way to keep doing it even afterwards, I betcha.
