The field goal was good.

The Oklahoma tackle should have been ejected for twice punching Stansly Maponga.

The holding call -- the first of the game -- that wiped out TCU's potential tying touchdown with 38 seconds left seemed awfully convenient (wink, wink) for the Big 12's BCS plans.

And that wasn't pass interference on the Horned Frogs' last play.

But enough about that.

The bottom line to Saturday's Big 12 throwback game -- 15 punts, sure-handed tackling, a mere five combined offensive touchdowns -- was that the Oklahoma Sooners protected their likely stake in the Sugar Bowl by staving off a TCU team that refused one more time to accept the cynical presumption that it didn't belong. ...

Armchair fans who only look at win-loss records will use the 7-5 record as proof that the Frogs can't compete in the Big 12. But anyone who knows anything about what happened this year will know that we have one of the best coaching staffs in the country. Further, this young group of players who beat Texas at WVU in their house and took OU to the wire are going to be special in the coming years.

I'm sad that we had the personnel losses we did, but I think we might view this season in a positive light down the road. It has the potential to show these young players how to handle adversity, which will be critical if we ever want to challenge for a Big 12 or National Championship.

good article by Gil, this season is an overwhelming sucess due to all the circumstances which began in Feb and continued during this 1st big 12 campaign. This program is one of the top 15 in the country, very few if any of the other top programs could have went through what this team did and ended up 7-5 in the Big 12, a conference that puts 9 of 10 teams in bowl games

That's a great point. How many AQ-conference teams over the past decade or two turn seasons with personnel losses to this level into under-500 campaigns? I can think of several years where typically big time teams drop off the face of the earth for a year when this type of thing or similar adversity happens. Texas in 2010, Nebraska in 2007, USC in the late nineties/early 2000s as just three quick examples.

To churn out this season is a testament to the coaching staff and the work ethic of the team.

WAG: in the 8-10 range. Pachall returning, and looking really good in Spring Practice, could move us up two or three spots.

This conversation will be re-played a gazillion times, after the bowl game.

I love the way coach P. has handled this season.He doesn't sit around and moan about his bad luck in player losses, just works with what he has. He is a real man and a great coach-- and this season has proved that.

I don't forsee us getting much love in the Top 25 polls to start next season. Most of those voting don't have any real idea (or won't remember) how far we have played with such a young team, etc... They'll just look at the 7-5 mark.

Getting a victory in a bowl against a respected team could help that, however.

It is very pleasant for me to think of our 2012 season as pretty much a graph whose line ended up significantly higher than when the season started.
