CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Bill Belichick’s Pro Football Hall of Fame plaque is already written, but the final paragraph on his coaching career will read, “Stayed too long.”

On Monday night, college football’s latest desperation Hail Mary coaching heave disguised as a great experiment made its debut in front of a list of luminaries from sports that it required a red carpet and the crew from “Entertainment Tonight.”

At age 70+, I am skeptical that he'll be able to attract talent if his team sucks this year. He better hope the backup QB is able to win some games.
agree. last night the sports spot light was on Chapel Hill. as his team got the [ Finebaum ] stomped out of them, he has a look on his face like he needed to take one. the hit they took to recruiting last night was epic.

I think both QBs will be serviceable this year, but right now the talent on this team can't put together a complex game plan outside of a couple of series for each QB. If he's smart he'll play both QBs (if Lopez is healthy) and scheme different defenses for both to keep the ACC defenses guessing. The bigger issue will be their defense.

As a 70 year-old who is fit and currently swims 6 miles/week and had a father live to a healthy 100, I'm very skeptical about (1) the fire in the belly and (2) complete mental competency of anyone my age or older. Bilichek is 25#+ overweight which is really, really bad for a 73 year-old, especially one who needs to be mobile and standing to press flesh with recruits and their parents in a 70 hour/week job. You younger folks may not know this and many of my contemporaries try to deny it, but septuagenarians are all quickly sliding in various degrees.

Last night, I was thinking about how we were considering hiring Gene Stallings in 1998 instead of Franchione. I thought it was a great idea at the time, but I really don't see how our path could've been any better over the last 27 years.

Watching last night's game made me have to touch myself to make sure what we've witnessed has been real. TCU is an amazing story that our closest competitors (UT, A&M, Baylor, etc.) downplay at every turn and wish would go away.

I appreciate sharing perspectives with nearly all of you. I was 41 when I started posting on frog forums when the Frogs were in a really dangerous predicament.

Well I am a 71 year old and reject your premise about Belichick's age and septuagenarians sliding mentally.
I ... um wait, what were we talking about?

The problem with a 73 year old coach is how can he relate to 18-23 year old kids. It's pretty tough, especially when you're naturally a grumpus. I think NC has made a very expensive mistake.
That’s always been my biggest question about just how successful can he be at the collegiate level. He drove top level nfl talent insane with just how much of an arse he was. How’s that same personality going to mesh w a 18 year old 4/5 star? (I’m guessing half his top players from the Patriots would have quit if they’d played under him their college freshman year…)

and if he does mellow out his style, just how much of his effectiveness does he lose as a result?
