FWST: Big 12 athletic directors meet this week

Big 12 athletic directors will meet today and Tuesday in Irving for talks about the future of the league, with topics to include the pros and cons of expansion as well as the viability of future scheduling alliances with other leagues.

Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby has said league officials could be proactive on the expansion front, if necessary, but stressed that most administrators remain satisfied with the league's 10-team configuration "until we're persuaded that larger is better."

Entering into a scheduling agreement with the ACC and other leagues could offer financial benefits without expanding the league, Bowlsby said.

League officials also will deal with future football schedules and other issues during the regularly scheduled meeting.

With Maryland bolting from the ACC to the B1G, despite the legal and financial uncertainties, you have to think the Big 12 is getting worried again about losing TCU to the PAC. TCU's inclusion to the Big 12 was one of the reasons Dodds demanded the GOR, and he will continue to cater to details to keep one of his most hated enemies, TCU, close to him.

It's not unreasonable to say we could be to the Big 12 and the PAC what Maryland is to the ACC and Big 10. We are the least messy avenue for the PAC to break out of their geographic gridlock, expand into Texas and plant their flag with the Metroplex and North Texas tv market's home team.

This is the conversation.

Bowlsby: "Let's begin this meeting by talking realignment. Mr. Dodds what do you want to do?...oh yeah, you too Mr. Castiglione, but Mr. Dodds first."

Dodds talks.

Bowlsby: "We have our directive, no time for others. See you next meeting. Meeting adjourned."

And what is it that you think the Big 12 should do right now?

So, you live in Louisville. So does my Uncle. Big fan of that school. You happy to see them going to the ACC instead of the BIG 12-2? If not happy, are you just assuming people smarter than you decided them going to the Big 12 was a bad idea?

I think it is pretty clear the reason the Big 12 isn't moving isn't because of Dodds. It is because right now we are stuck- there is a possibility of some big pickups (FSU et al), but they aren't ready to pull the trigger. Until then the league will talk about being happy at 10, scheduling alliances, etc.

One more strike by the Big 10/SEC would change everything. I just hope the Big 12 GOR is as solid as it is made out to be. The fact the ACC can't get it done, is reassuring that it is and the Big 10/SEC will strike east, if they strike.

Yet they were "smart" enough to let TCU join the B12...

PAC won't take a religiously-affiliated university.

My version of the conversation:

This is the conversation.

Bowlsby: "Let's begin this meeting by talking realignment. Mr. Dodds what do you want to do?...oh yeah, you too Mr. Castiglione, but Mr. Dodds first. TV peeps, what will you pay for?"

Dodds TV peeps' spokesman talks.

Bowlsby: "We have our directive, no time for others. See you next meeting. Meeting adjourned."

That, as I understand it, may have been what the meeting considering TCU to replace A&M as a conference member sounded like.

I'm happy they found a spot somewhere, although I think the ACC is extremely vulnerable right now. If some large scale ACC movement occurs then I could still see them sliding into the Big 12 at spot 15 or 16. It would be a blast to someday see TCU play here.

Let's not confuse issues. We were a good fit for the conference but the conference was in an "add schools or die" situation. That seems to be the only time we (the Big 12) can get anything done.

It seems some people think we are in the same position right now -- that we are in a do or die situation. So, were the same people who voted TCU in "smart" back then, but simply acting as puppets for Dodds now?

No, imagine Oklahoma State leaving and Kansas State leaving now. Then, that would be the same situation that the conference faced when they added us.

What I'm saying is that this conference needs to function at a level above crisis management.

And you are certain they are not?
