A World Cup team based at TCU in Fort Worth looks increasingly dim

By Muck Angle

The dream is Messi and the Argentine national team calling Fort Worth and TCU “home” for as long they are in the 2026 World Cup, but that fantasy will not become a reality.

The World Cup starts in four months, and teams are selecting base camps for the 48-team tournament that will be played in Mexico, Canada and the United States. So far, TCU/Fort Worth and the other three North Texas potential sites have not been picked in a selection process that will run through the end of March.

Local organizers are now in the “concerned” phase, and, organizers said, TCU/Fort Worth does not expect to be selected.

I thought I read somewhere else that some teams are looking for smaller colleges/venues in smaller towns (but still fairly close to an airport). Being in the middle of a larger city is too much distraction for them. Both for their players, but also from fan access.

However (and this is probably more accurate), I also read an article where Portugal picked Miami, even though they have 2 games in Houston. Their reasoning was that the Houston games are in a closed stadium, but their 3rd game is in Miami, so they'd rather train in the climate of Miami. I think there is probably more truth in that and would apply to teams playing at Jerry's World also. But also, it's Miami.

The real concern is that TCU has opened themselves up to a World Cup Country that is not a money magnet and or at the very least will host a team/country that is not well received globally much less locally. Example: Iran, Uzbekistan, Haiti, Ivory Coast, Cape Verde etc…
Would anyone around here be excited about hosting them? Not saying we won’t or give our best effort but there will not be any joyous outpouring.
Just putting it out there.

I see no reason to insult our foreign guests as "dim". They're just soccer players (aka communists).

It’s not all bad. TCU can protect its facilities for its teams. Maybe hosting someone helps FTW or even TCU soccer, but I’m not sure it’s a huge boost. I’d rather keep those facilities for TCU. SMU(T) isn’t hosting with all their soccer influence.
