4 takeaways from No. 24 TCU football’s bitter loss at Arizona State

TEMPE, Ariz. – Despite leading by 17 at one point, No. 24 TCU couldn’t finish, and defending Big 12 champion Arizona State came back to pull off a 27-24 win Friday night.

“We kept shooting ourselves in the foot a little bit,” TCU head coach Sonny Dykes said. “We had some penalties and things in the first half that got us behind the chains. Our inability to run the football hurt us all night; we had to abandon it. When you do that, teams can really come after you, and I think we put our quarterback in hard spots.”

First down: run into a wall.

Second down: false start penalty, then incomplete.

Third down: sack.

My take away is that we're three years in and there are no excuses. This is what Briles's offense will be. Good enough to beat up on dreck, but consistently unable to control the clock in big games.

The more-rational-than-thou crowd are always accusing the anti-Tape-fingers posters of holding a grudge. My point has always been that he doesn't do anything for TCU that many other less distasteful people couldn't do, so why hire him? Is there really no one less controversial who couldn't coach an offense this soft and sloppy? I bet we could be this mediocre with lots of other OCs.

They probably didn't think it would rain in AZ and left the shoes with longer cleats in FW.
Another indication of how bush league out program has become in the world of big boy football.

Can you imagine Alabama, Ga., Osu, clemson, ou etc...not showing up with every foot wear?

Bingo.

After a few years of his tenure, the things that stand out to me are: 1.) His Game Plans are not well thought out, 2.) He has no ability to make adjustments to move to what is working, and away from what isn't, 3.) When opponents make adjustments to stop what is working, we have absolutely no counter for it and begin to flounder. Successful coaches have the ability (and humility) to understand where their plans have gone awry, and the mental agility to move to a more successful scheme. Unsuccessful coaches continue to bash their heads against the wall, thinking that their brilliant plans will come to fruition at some point.

He was hired because Warden Art was an old pal, and Sonny likes to help out old pals and their kids. There were a dozen or more guys that could have filled the bill, but that's who Sonny picked. My earnest hope was that the offense would be great this year, and that he'd be hired away. Good riddance. But, alas...

I think the inability to run the ball is not just bad coaching. As it has been said all over the board our OL is not good and our RB's are average at best. Be very interesting to see what happens when Barnes comes back . Too many times in the ASU game we would hand off the ball and an ASU defensive player was right there at the same time. Pretty hard to get the run going when there is little blocking or holes being created. This is going to be a challenge all season unless we come up with a different plan.

We broke out Wildfrog last year with Savion when the run game wasn’t working. Hope Briles tries that again this year, possibly with WR #0 Rodgers…

This is all that matters. LOL

KB could be the best OC in the country, and all this clown would do is [ hundin] and complain about him.

It was pointed out on another thread that we have run the ball well when we go heavy on the line. It's when we get cute and go wide that we get in trouble. Opposing teams have figured out our weak points and they are exploiting them. We haven't made the necessary adjustments to counter this.

seemed like we were doing pretty good going wide the other night. I know they adjusted, but there is enough to scheme.

Nope, he's here until Sonny has the guts to move him on, and at this point there is nothing to suggest that Son of a Briles knows how to recruit and coach an offensive front that can run block at a conference championship level. We'll keep winning eight or nine games just by having better players than most of the Big 12, but we won't be out playing equal or marginally superior talent to win the big ones with this level of offensive line play.

And anyone who thinks Barnes and McAllister would miraculously have made all the difference is fooling themselves. Hoover wasn't getting the ball to McAllister down field in 1.5 seconds before getting trucked, and Barnes wasn't going to turn himself into vapor to side through no gaps.
