Is there any shot at getting him back like we did Glascow? I don't want to throw our OC's under the bus, but it seems Fuente had one helluva play book. Perhaps our OC's did not prepare for Boykin in the manner they should? With Pachall returning and a better Oline, maybe we will see that fire power again?

Actually that is not as rare as you think it is. Terry Shea left San Jose State to be Bill Walsh's offensive coordinator at Stanford. I also hear that Walker is about to leave New Mexico State to be the new DC at Cal under Dykes.

Honestly I can only recall one year no one said anything about our play calling and that was the Rose Bowl year. Sad part is a few times people didn't like some of the play calling that year either. This year we had how many freshman, redshirt freshman and sophmores on the team. How young was the line this year? It is going to be better next year I promise.

Hard to call plays when the OL was so bad, especially on pass protection this year. If you have a great OL, however, you will look like a play-calling genius! There is a chance Pachall would not have made it through the year the way he got beat up early in the year. Made SMU look like they had great DL, and Pachall really got beaten up in that game. The good thing is there is a lot of room for improvement preparing for this bowl game. Time for the OL to work on technique, time for a lot to mentally sink in for the whole team, too.

I truly believe with the offensive line with Casey he would have ended up in a cast this year. They got better first on run plays then are still a work in progress on the pass. Too many times I watched defensive players come in untouched and lineman would check them off with a tap on the side but never look towards them. Then started noticing it wasn't all their fault it was a tight end or a back who was supposed to follow through with a block and didn't. But as young as they are they will get better. Better yet some of the older ones will be back from injury or grade issues.

People can rationalize all they want but the playcalling, as has been discussed in-depth in numerous threads, was poor all year. With CP it was bad and it got worse with TB. If we want to acheive the potential of this team next year, it will need to get better either with the guys we've got or with someone else.

I still don't understand why anyone was thinking the play calling was going to be on par with previous years. A ton of youngers plus a rookie play caller at OC equals issues. Then you take away the veteran QB who the OC was game planning with since the spring, and of course it's going to get worse.
Stop it with the unrealistic expectations.

Anyone who believes with the attrition we've had it's still play calling lives in a bigger fantasy than I do and all I can say is "Wow"! 7-5 with 24 1st and 2nd string players injured or gone! We should have won the national championship but our play calling caused the problem! :tongue:

I don't disregard the issues you speak of but I don't think I'm being unrealistic at all to expect that our offensive staff be capable of formulating a strategy to take advantage of our team's strenghs and show some level of creativity. TCU is a high level football program in a conference where all the teams have good coaching staffs, not a Sunbelt team. In my mind, we should all have high expectations of our staff.

I agree that we should have high expectations. All great programs do. But to expect us to have gotten anywhere close to being tops in this conference after all the player attrition and losing our veteran play caller is just simply not realistic.
I have high expectations, but I'm also a realist. And we won 2 more games than I expected us to this year after all the personnel losses.
Remember how many times CP could hardly push himself up off the ground during games against our 4 least competitve opponents.Then Boykin had to face the Big Boys the last 8 games !

I think the bigger issue is that we had Trevone Boykin as Pachall's back-up. They are almost opposites in terms of playing style.
When Pachall backed up Andy Dalton they were relatively similar players... definitely have their differences but can do a lot of the same things. If Dalton had gotten hurt, Pachall would have been able to roll with the gameplan relatively easily (not as successfully, but not a disaster)

Exactly. THEN, you add in the new play caller situation we had going on at the OC spot, and it just accentuates that already glaring issue. I truly believe Anderson will be fine. Just give him a minute to get his bearings and learn.

That's when I was blaming it all on the lineman until there was a zoom in for a game and the lineman did a check off on someone coming by him at full steam and I realized someone else was supposed to be blocking and didn't. So either a TE, WR or RB wasn't in position and is why Casey was getting leveled. But those were passing plays and we all know Casey's running ability can't compare to Boykin's. Once Boykin came in it looked like we had a new offensive line but it was his ability to run that opened the rushing offense up! Poor Casey! :tongue:
1st down...zone read. EVERY F'ing 1st Down. That kind of predictability has nothing to do with a bad O-line.

With the way Michigan St struggles on offense, you may see 50%+ of our plays be zone read. So I'm guessing you will get your wish.

For the record, I never said anything in this thread or any other about expecting us to be at the top of the conference this season. I said that I expect us to have an offensive staff worthy of our program. Just to be clear.

And given everything that they overcame to put us at 7 wins and be highly competitive in every game except 1, I'd say they are pretty damn worthy of our program.
