From a Pitt fan.....

Don't ever take Jamie Dixon for granted. Many in our fanbase did and well, it hasn't gone well. Amazingly, many still can't admit we screwed up 10 years ago.

Is Dixon flashy...no. Is it likely he will ever make deep runs...probably not, though you can luck into one.

What he does do though is get more out of less than just about any team in the country. Did it at Pitt, seems to do it at TCU. He is now the best coach in two school's basketball histories.

I still get angry to this day about how Pitt handled him, and essentially letting him walk/pushing him out.

Just don't take "well he ONLY gets to the NCAA tournament" for granted. Trust me, the grass isn't greener.

BTW I will be rooting hard for you today.

Well said. Thanks for the reality check we can all use, especially after we ran off Billy Tubbs like you did Dixon...and suffered for a long time like you are now.
How does the fanbase generally feel about Dixon?

When Dixon left Pitt, I would say 80% of the reaction was either not caring or outright celebrating. They thought that his last 5 years here, 3 of 5 NCAA tournaments, were easy to replicate...and obviously it wasn't.

I think the players love him, some fans don’t like his personality. Don’t go by what you read on some of our game threads, there are many football fans here who seem confused by basketball and love the self therapy of a game thread. People here like and respect Jamie. Unlike at Pitt, he has a strong TCU tie beyond coaching.

Should’ve seen some of the comments after Colorado ran us out of the gym. Gotta admit I was wondering if was not keeping up anymore. Boy has he proven he’s still got it. Definitely his best coaching season at TCU regardless of what happens today.
CJD and the Frogs deserved all of those nasty comments after the CU game, especially by the fans who actually went to the game. It was awful. I left when we were down 28 with 8 minutes remaining and the 150 CU students there were going crazy.

And, for the record, I am thrilled to be wrong. I thought we were done. We came back and fought like hell to get here. I cannot give CJD and the guys more credit for not quitting on the season and learning how to close out games.

Now, it is hated Duke in our way. If we can close them out like we did OSU, then this team and coaching staff would become legendary.

Like I said, just be careful what you wish for. Pitt is not traditionally a winning basketball school as I am sure you realize TCU isn't as well. Pitt fans got the idea the Pitt brand was the reason we won, and that any coach could duplicate that. I remember many Pitt fans saying Dixon's last 5 years were "awful" when they made the tourney 3 of those years and two of those years they were on the 8/9 line but were top 16 seeds in the kenpom each year so severely underseeded.

What about his personality? From everything I have heard he is a genuinely great person. Don't know if you know the story, but while at Pitt he actually helped pull someone from an overturned/burning car while driving past an accident.

He was subject to a lot of personal attacks from our fanbase. Some suggested he is autistic. Many whined about him not making eye contact in the handshake line. Really dumb, pettycomments

I don’t follow Pitt. I believe you did not have success with the coach that followed Dixon. What is the state of the program? I watched Pitt games when Dixon was there because of him.

Just met him once at a practice we were able to attend. He is personable. When it comes to basketball he is super intense. Some people are just turned off by that. His players talk constantly about practice in a positive way, connecting good practices with wins. That’s good coaching, I believe.

True words. Don’t take making the BIG dance lightly. We should know. Also we have an NIT banner. He has players in the NBA. Dixon does a damn good job without the financial resources others have.
You can ask Baylor how fleeting success is. I was PO’d when JD was wasn’t given and interview and he went to Pitt. The day TCU signed him I immediately bought 4 season tickets. CJD knows basketball and the players respect his immense knowledge and competitiveness. He got them to win the close games with 1 minute left. OSU saw that - full confidence. Yesterday became disgusting after they T’d CJD up- you could feel the air go out. We weren’t that far down at the time but it’s like the team lost focus. I will never forgive or forget that officiating crew- the broadcast team and the sponsors that did their best to keep us from winning yesterday. I hope somebody is talking to NCAA about it- we got Duked.

The problem is...No one cares

I've warmed up to him a bit. I think he is a decent coach and I never did think he was a jerk or anything, but it's still hard to watch him. He's barking instructions on literally every pass, every cut, every single thing that happens in a game. It never stops. I really don't see ANY other top coaches doing that, even the most "intense" ones. Most all just kind of watch and then during dead balls they might say something if needed. He coaches during a game like his players have no idea what they are supposed to be doing. I know that second part isn't true but man, just sit down and let them play sometimes.

Let it go, Wex - it is part of who he is as a coach and you are exaggerating as most everyone does these days (the bad normal that we all have to put up with while people make a point), and the players like him, and he is very good coach, not just a decent coach.

He is the perfect coach for TCU. He squeezes every drop out of the limited resources he has. He should be up for coach of the year for building/getting this squad to the NCAA’s and beating Ohio St. In my few conversations with him, he loved Pitt and probably would have stayed (my opinion) if they had not treated him shabbily after all he did for them. It is the old story of being a victim of his own success. Kind of like GP who will lead the nation in defense within a year or two at USC, but we ran him off.
