Friendly Pointers for the Offensive Coordinators

1. On 4th down when there are just a few yards to make a first lets go for it instead of trying for a field goal. Field goals are just not going to cut it against teams with high powered offenses. Also it is more demoralizing to miss a field goal than to not make a first down.

2. Lets get some trick plays. I mean a lot of them, like a special play book just for trick plays. I am not talking about the kind where the QB runs up to the line of scrimmage real fast so he can get the ball and run straight forward. If we need to send someone up to Boise and pay them to go over trick plays so be it. Go back 4 or 5 years and find trick plays which worked with other teams from different conferences.. Compile some good ones.

True trick plays are overrated. Used sparingly they are fine, but there's a reason they aren't an integral part of the gameplan. They work at a pretty low rate because they rely on precise execution (often with players doing things they don't usually do) and can blow up in your face if you don't execute.

OTOH, a healthy dose of misdirection plays is vital to a scheme to keep the defense on its heels.

How about not being so predictable! Empty backfield runs up the middle on first then same play again so we have third and 8 leaves us in a bad spot. Look at what our offense did against KState and OK State and how about not play calling like that. Look at what WVU did to Oklahoma and get a clue.

Oh, and of course run the snot out of the short side option - I'm sure Okie won't know to defend that.

Spot on. That's why I've advocated misdirection for the last three years. It should be as much a part of the play book as dives and sweeps.

Yes, I have come to despise the short side option. It should be banned from the playbook.

Hey,maybe if our guys can visualize they are the other team running a trick play against us, while they are doing their trick play ,it'll work?What do ya think? :unsure:

Let's focus on stopping a trick play before we have our own.

And both of your suggestions kind of suck.

1) Stop the 1st down - run, 2nd - run/pass, 3rd - pass, 4th down - punt that we run so freaking often.

Oh and when we show five WRs and no running back and then motion for the RB to jog up beside the QB right before the snap, everybody knows we are going to run!

The best piece of advice goes straight to GP. Drop the 'win by one' mantra, instill a sense of 'win by 21, going away'.

With the poor refereeing we've seen, we have to play so the refs are marginalized. Make them not matter.

Quick strike, tempo, use the athletes. Every play should be expected to take it to the house.

We have a defensive-minded HC, and he is great, but we need an 1 aggressive monster with no heart calling offense.

I'd suggest trying the zone read on every first down. They'll never suspect it...

I think these are some good points. The great offenses like Boise and even TCU a couple of years ago could take it to the house at any moment. To Gary's credit though I do not think he will ever micro manage the offense which is a good thing imo. TCU's offense, since Gary has been coach, has always been predicated by the OC. We have had some questionable ones and there has been a great one. Gary is patient, loyal and slow to fire coaches.

The only problem that I had with play calling was not throwing on first down. Our OL was not good enough to run on first down or throw on second and long. Unfortunately, with the poor pass blocking this year, the QB did not have enough time for us to run the double move, which was amazingly successful when we gave the QB enough time to pump fake then throw.

It all depends on how well the OL improves by next season.

I agree 100%. When you tell 18-22 year old kids to win by one point and you get 10 points ahead, they tend to ease up. That is why
they seem to play up or down to the opposition. Tell them to win by as much as they can, so that they play "pedal to the metal" for
the whole game. This "win by one point" philosophy is the worst thing he could say.
