The speech veered from football to God to health care, images of SEC spring games, religious revivals and Tea Parties coming to mind, and Craig James was at the center of it.

He stood on the stage Tuesday at Prestonwood Baptist Church's PowerLunch series, crisp suit clinging to his body, rolling through these topics with the choreographed ease and preparedness of an orchestra conductor.

Then he choked up for a moment.

"I feel strongly we've been in a spiritual war the last four months," he started, needing to collect himself before discussing the topic that's brought him more notoriety than any ESPN television appearance or new book.

James and his family, of course, filed a private complaint in December accusing former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach of improper treatment of James' son, Adam, who had suffered a concussion.

"We were hoping that would stop the insanity that was done to him," James said.
Leach was later fired. He described James as meddlesome, more so than any of the other players' parents combined, and has included James in his lawsuit against Texas Tech.

James didn't touch on any of the legal circumstances. He began the discussion of this issue after describing what he termed a trying year. He had already seen his father pass away and his mother fall ill.

Then came the Tech controversy.

James said the family received death threats. He said that the police had to sit outside his home.

Though tears and broken words came across recanting the events, James wanted to make sure that signs of regret never did.

"Our character, our honesty and our integrity are in place," he insisted. "We've done nothing wrong."

I am not a Craig James fan, but the fact that his family received death threats and had to have police stationed outside their home just really crosses the line. The kid may not be the player his father was and he may not have the work ethic either, but he didn't deserve what happened to him either. His injury was legitimate and Leach crossed the line. Having Craig James as a parent is a double edged sword, and Leach knew that going in to the recruiting process. If you anger Craig, you have problems. If Craig likes what is going on with you as the coach, you get national publicity on a regular basis.

People get death threats all the time. I can remember certain TCU alumni getting similar threats in 1984 for funneling cash to players, causing that sickening season. You mess up something that alot of people hold dear...threats will follow, but are rarely acted out.

The Pirate of the Plains did what hundreds of other coaches would have done, or worse. Was it right? Maybe not. But it didn't hurt little Adam. Coach has a TEAM to worry about.

Craig James brought all this, sniff, sniff, upon himself.

I guess James honestly and with integrity took the SMU booster's money under the table.

James never took their money at all. He was a commit to SMU during his junior year of high school. That was where his girlfriend was going, so that was where he was going. James and Lance McIlhenny were key cogs of the Pony Express and neither took money to go there. Making statements like this is just like saying everybody on the 84 TCU team took money. It just wasn't the case here either.

You are naive to think that Craig James did not take money from boosters in those days. One of my best friends from High School went to SMU on a football scholly (1983). Everyone was getting paid. Not just at SMU, either.

If what you are saying is true, are there any TCU players from the mid-80s that would like to tell us how much they were getting paid here?

My point is there are several TCU players from that era that say they never got a dime. Craig James made the same claim when he worked at a local television affiliate here and challenged anybody to come forward and say differently. No one ever did.

St. James is a [ profanity ] and he can rot in Hades with his "holier than thou", self.

You can't blame the kid, but you can blame the parent for the way the kid turns out.

How sad. And small.
That he should use such a word.

Yeah, it doesn't matter if James took money. Probably he did not. He's still a jerk, either way, IMO, which should not bother him a bit.

Are those who believe James didn't get paid by the Bill Clements slush fund basing that on James' testimony that he didn't?

On the plus side the younger James has decided on a career in landscaping and lawn maintenance.

To borrow from a game day sign reference:

Craig James made a statement to the press while with (New England ?)the nfl .
" I thought I was getting paid really well in college until I talked to a guy from Penn St. . These yankees pay much better ."
That was in the papers and radio .
Either he's full of crap or you are .

I we had a truth meter on him, I would bet my life savings that he did...based on anecdotal and comparison data.
