Chandler Morris using controversial strategy in pursuit of seventh college season

The 2023 season was Chandler Morris's fourth on a college roster but, if his ongoing eligibility lawsuit against the NCAA is successful, it would be the first to count toward his 4-year eligibility.

The son of former SMU and Arkansas head coach (and current Clemson offensive coordinator) Chad Morris, Chandler's career began at Oklahoma in 2020, when he saw spot duty as Spencer Rattler's backup as a true freshman. That was, of course, the covid year and stands as a free pass for everyone. No harm, no foul there. Morris transferred to TCU ahead of the 2021 season and appeared in four games backing up Max Duggan -- taking a redshirt year that no one disputes.

Morris started six games for the Frogs in 2023, all 13 games at North Texas in 2024, and then went 14-for-14 in the starting lineup for Virginia in 2025. No one disputes those seasons as counting toward Morris's eligibility, either.

So Chandler's 4 games in '22:
At Colorado - 3rd quarter injury
Vs. Texas Tech - Played but no stats in 34-24 win (spelled Duggan for a few plays with handoffs???)
Vs. Iowa State - 5-6 passing with a TD in blowout win
Vs. Georgia - mop up in last series in blowout loss.

So whatever participation he had vs. Tech was for his mental health? GMAB. I don't blame him for wanting to pick up a couple $mil with another year of college ball. But his argument will embarrassingly fall apart in court.

Edit: I went through the whole play-by-lay on gofrogs.com. Max was in on every series. It does show 3 kneel downs on our last series to end the game, though does not list the QB. Maybe that's when Morris was in? Or else he just handed off a play or two when Max needed a break.

Augusta Free Press: The Chandler Morris legal situation played out as well as it could have

This may be an unpopular take, but the way the court case involving Chandler Morris was handled today is clearly the best thing for the UVA Football program.

Charlottesville Circuit Court Judge Claude V. Worrell II denied a request from Morris to issue a preliminary injunction against the NCAA, which ruled earlier this year against a waiver request submitted by the QB for a seventh year of eligibility, citing issues with his availability in his 2022 season at TCU.

Worrell, in his ruling, found that Morris’s case would likely not succeed if it were given a full evidentiary hearing – which is the standard for the issuance of an injunction.

A full hearing would likely play out over the course of several months, even just in terms of getting on the schedule, meaning we’d be talking about a case getting to court, at best, in the fall, more likely, after the 2026 season.
