As I recall, he also had unique ability to know when the defensive back was not paying attention when a pass was overthrown and Renfro had the field skills to almost stop in midstride and let the D back crash into him causing penalty and giving the offense another chance after an overthrown pass.

For those too young to remember, Mike Renfro is the biggest single reason instant replay review exists in sports now. He was robbed of a TD late in the AFC Championship game vs the Steelers which would have sent the Oilers to the first and only Superbowl in the team’s history. Referees on the field ruled he came down with the catch with one foot out of bounds, replay showed he clearly got both feet in.

He was raped in the end zone in games against Baylor (one of the coldest I have sat through) and top 10 Tech that went uncalled and prevented wins.

I also remember his water-splashing slide catches against Miami in a downpour at AGC in an upset win. There were a few thousand people in attendance all under the upper deck except for me and my brother.

Some friends and I were in a bar (I know, shocking!) in the Caribbean someplace, the Cowboys at the Steelers were on the TV. Place was packed with Steeler people, all decked out in their gamer gear waving Terrible Towels and such. My long-suffering wife was sitting near a woman whose husband was engrossed completely by the game. She said, "Oh, him? He knows everything about the Steelers. Everything. Just ask him..." I looked over at this fellow, and said, "Renfro caught that ball."

"HE DID NOT! HE DID NOT! HE WAS OUT OF BOUNDS!"

My wife later asked me what I had done to provoke this fellow. "What the hell did you tell him?"

"A statement about a play in the 1979 AFC Championship game."

"He got all freaked out over a game (does math) 37 years ago?!? You men are insane. All of you."

I honestly don’t think he gets enough recognition for how great he was. I think it’s partly that there was nothing physically about him that stood out. I had a chat with him once at the Cowboys facility in VR when I was there covering draft day. He looked like he couldn’t bench triple digits. But sneaky fast, phenomenal hands and body control, and great vertical. IMO TCU’s best ever.

I met his son about 10 years ago- The one who dabbled at WR for the Frogs. I told him tell his dad how disappointed I was in him for not making that catch. He laughed and said, yeah he’s still pissed about that.

They get the call right in that Oilers-Steelers game and who knows how much NFL history is changed.
That Steelers team imo was the most complete team in nfl history, for the longest time. What to me was so maddening was that in just about any other era the Oilers would have been the ones going to multiple Superbowls. Their talent was amazing. Only guy I didn’t think was up to par was that jughead Pastorini. Physically incredible (I remember him once launching a bullet about 40 yards falling down) but lacked the QB smarts to be great.
Got to catch a pass from him in elementary school, several of their players came to our neighborhood for a PR bit.

Dante is a great guy. We met him in at a golf tournament in Jackson Hole about 20 years ago. He and his partner faced my oldest brother and my dad in a playoff for the course championship. His partner was a scratch golfer and carried them. DP's swing was so bad that you can tell those painkiller shots in his ribs have stayed with him over the years. Our side won the title when my brother birdied the last playoff hole. He was very generous in defeat although he is a horrible karaoke singer.

Fun weekend for our Luv Ya Blue family. He was a such a good guy. He said one of the worst days in his life was when Bum traded him. It was like being traded by your dad.

Renfro’s Arlington Heights High School team faced future Oilers teammate Earl Campbell’s Tyler John Tyler team, in the playoffs, in Fort Worth, at Farrington Field.
