Pretty positive that's not how it works. They are ineligible when they take their last final and grades are turned in at the end of last semester. That is why you see football players have to sit out bowl games.

He would have become ineligible at the end of Fall semester which was before Hawaii tournament. So grades did not keep him from playing yesterday.
