Fall Camp!

Friday is the beginning of fall camp and expectations/hopes are high.

In addition to hearing of the progress of the team we also get to see some of the new names for the first time on the field. Here are a few to watch along with a list of all the new roster players who joined since the spring:

A few to watch:

A couple of speedy WRs in #17 Dane Jones (6-0/180) and #80 Jacob Hayes (5-10/170). While neither freshman is expected to push the 1s or 2s they may crack the depth chart or push for early playing time.

The linebacker position has some good talent but experienced depth is an issue so FCS All-American transfer from Missouri State, #27 Michael Teason (6-2/215), should get lots of work.

The offensive line has had mixed success the last few seasons and lots of questions remain but help was added this summer. #61 Dylan Kinney (6-3/310), a transfer from ACU, is expected to push for a spot with the 2s. In addition, several big true freshmen arrived, which include #72 Jackson Jones (6-7/300) and #73 Killan Registe (6-6/300). But watch for #65 Logan Schram (6-6/320) at OT.

Experience and depth in the defensive backfield is very good and the freshman class just added more on the way. One name to watch though is Cal transfer #13 Ryan Yaites at safety. Yaites was highly recruited out of Denton Guyer and originally signed with LSU. The hope is he will make his mark under Avalos.

Some of the other new faces:

#12 QB David Potter (6-4/220) PWO from Texas High with a big arm and successful high school career including a senior year with 33 TDs and over 3,000 passing yards.

#44 LB Sam Haley (6-3/225) from Nashville and picked TCU over offers from Tenn, UNC, South Car and many others. Good size and awareness.

#52 DT Blake Robinett (6-4/270) from All District at FW All Saints with 8 sacks and 18.5 TFLs as a senior

#40 CB Deon Mays (6-1/175) speedster from Arlington High

#38 CB Gil Jackson (6-3/185) big corner from Missouri City originally committed to Tech

#31 S Julius Simms (6-2/190) from Whitehouse and was heavily recruited by Kansas State and Michigan

#36 S Joseph Albright (5-11/175) from Houston Westfield has good speed and cover skills

One face did disappear though we hardly had a chance to get to know him. Safety Kollin Collier signed out of JUCO before spring and by April he transferred to Old Dominion.

SI predicts BU and TCU in B12 championship game

If you asked me right now, I’d say it’s a 5 horse race between TCU, BU, TTU, ASU, and KSU for the top 2 spots. And because of the braindead scheduling decisions insisted upon by the conference, there’s a chance at least one of the best 2 teams isn’t in the conference championship game. It’s gonna be a weird, wacky, and fun season.

I agree on all but 1 of your top 5. Today, I watched a bit of the B12 media days with half of the coaches being q'd. ASUs Kenny Dillingham is a good coach but is not as experienced as Klieman, Campbell, Aranda. ASU has the highest B12 returning production %'s on offense/defense. I think by mid-season they will realize how incredibly difficult it is to replace Skattebo a literal throwback type of player. Nick Saban's favorite player from last year.

BU simply because of RBs Bryson Washington and Dawson Pendergrass should compete for the top 2 spots. QB depth with transfer Walker White coming over from Auburn to back up Sawyer Robertson who had a pretty good '24. Both 6'3 + 220 + who can hold up in a 15-game season.

KSU because of Klieman a good coach with the details. A QB who is vulnerable to being knocked out because of his build. Good LB play in Romaine lettuce.

Texas Tech. They have the Qatar money flowing in and they are spending it. Quinten Joyner, potentially more talented than any other RB in B12. David Bailey & Romello Height, two edge rushers who are arguably the best pass rushing duos in the country. Then you have some Interior Defensive Lineman who could make Tech one of the better DLs in the country. Middle Eastern countries do not like Christian Universities beating their schools like TCU did last year. And BTW their Backup QB Will Hammond is a gamer, He did pretty well against TCU last year.

Then you have TCU dark horse with sneaky depth on the OL/DL. Perry Cole & Kelten Mickell two JC transfers hopefully ready to contribute.to the DL. Youngster Tristan Johnson who last year played better than good on DL scrimmage. Paul Oyewale is back who started 8 games in '23 and held his own.

The WR room : It is far from final. Eric McAlister yes done. He is the Alpha. I predict Jordan Dwyer (transfer)and Jordyn Bailey will be leapfrogged by way way superior talent in Dozie Ezukanma and Gekyle Baker OR Ed Small. Jordan Dwyer hopefully not be exposed for lack of hand fighting capability.

I think this is the most likely pack, too.

One of the biggest questions for me this year is, will the coaching staff actually put the best players out on the field? It feels like every year it’s either taken an injury or half the season for the staff to figure out there’s a more talented player riding the bench. Elarms-Orr, McIver, and Payne come to mind last season. Same thing happened with Duggan and Hoover, ironically both with Morris being the guy in the way.

Point is, it seems like every season we’ve had a position or two struggle, only for it to noticeably improve when the backup gets a chance to start.

My concern this year is slot, which is super important because Hoover is most efficient over the middle. Ed Small seemingly is getting a lot of hype, but will he actually get a chance to start? Or will he sit behind Everhart and Bailey for half the season?

Morris was a good QB and had a higher rating than Hoover that year. When he left TCU he did well also so not sure that is fair. Obviously Duggan is a different issue, but his traits are hard to judge in just practices, kid was all heart.

Elarms-Orr admitted it took him a while to learn the defense and think that was true for many last year. One of the reasons i think this team will improve much more this year.

I do not see Small beating out Everhart or Bailey but he may get a lot of PT. Everhart just need to be able to stay on the field and hope we see a lot of him this year. Small can move to the outside also.

I kind of feel that a lot of the positions are already decided, but I would agree that they have to find the right fit at the WR spots including who plays inside and who plays outside. Hoover is a tremendous passer over the middle and Bech was a huge target on those plays. There are plenty of good receivers in the room, we just got to find the right ones.
