"The ACC is facing nearly certain extinction as a viable football conference as eight current member institutions are currently engaged in serious negotiations to depart the beleaguered conference for the Big 10, SEC or Big 12.

The Big 10 conference has received applications for membership from UVA, UNC, and Georgia Tech while FSU, Clemson, UNC, NC State and Virginia Tech have contacted the SEC about potential membership.

Despite public statements to the contrary the Big 12 conference has been in close contact with FSU, Clemson, Virginia Tech and Miami about joining the Big 12."

Also, how amazing would it be to play FSU? Such a great tradition. I would like Georgia Tech as well, for academic credibility. Louisville as well, but I figure we could get them just by asking.

I think the concern is that Penn St. may be so hammered by the results of the abuse scandal that they may well be on the way out. So - 16 is still the number they are shooting for.

If the ACC was so unstable that a Maryland-for-UConn switch would have everybody running for the hills, why would only FSU and Maryland vote against the $50 million exit fee? Doesn't make sense.

Maryland being replaced by Uconn isn't the seminal event in this possible implosion. Its the $ec that will decide if this comes to pass. If the $ec decides they want to add the Virginia and NC markets to their $ec network footprint they will offer Va Tech and either Unc or NC St. I'm hard pressed to believe either would turn down an opportunity to join the $ec.

After that its every program for itself.

Is "The Dude" going out on a limb and guessing? You bet - he says as much. But his logic is more sound than just throwing things against the wall to see what sticks. He is to WVU what Chip Brown is to UT - he only puts out there what the WVU athletic administration wants out. And AD Luck has been right in the middle of the Big East/Acc/Sec/Big xii realignment for several years now. Slive will determine if this comes to pass or not. If the decision is made solely on a business (dollar) basis it probably is the end of the ACC as it currently stands.

The only person I have seen accurate with conference realignment is McMurphy who reported for CBS Sports. Now he reports for ESPN, and since he is now reporting for them I don't think we have anyone who really knows what is going to happen.

My guess ACC brings in Louisville to block any Big 12 advancement and to please Boston College at the same time. Big 12 will then stay at 10 and sit. It would stink but that's the most likely path. Next likely senario is Big 12 adds Louisville. Then everything else is the crazy stuff that noone can predict or knows about.

Oliver Luck has only been the WV AD for 2 years. Before that he worked in MLS and NFL Europe. So 'in the middle of it for several years' is a bit of an exaggeration. He also spent time on the WVU Board, but as we've seen those guys are usually the last to know.

The article it says penn state could be hurt by the clery act. Clery act is a statute that requires to report criminal acts/attacks on near campus. Over a decade of not reporting would mean that penn state looses federal aid- aka, no student loans. If that happens, no more penn state.

Fair question. I remember watching some daytime talk show 10 or 15 years ago when I was home sick from work one day. Reba McIntyre was on babbling about how much she loved her husband Charlie. Two weeks later she filed for divorce. Did something happen in the time between her public declaration of undying love? Or were there already issues under the surface that caused such a last ditch public effort to save it?

There's a ton of distrust and frustration within the ACC membership. The primary cause is that the conference is run with a basketball first mentality that is not in alignment with the fiscal realities of a football TV world. UNC/Duke run the conference like UT runs the big xii. The commish is seedy and his son got paid large commissions on the signing of a sub par media deal, he lied to the membership about the ND agreement and he is reluctant to share basic information requests from certain member schools.

Why did all but two schools vote to pass the new exit fee? No idea. My best guess is that they thought that neither the B1G or the $ec was serious about adding teams.

We'll know more within a month. Either the SEC decides they are fine at 14 and do not need the Virginia and NC markets - in which case this round of expansion probably stops. Or they give out invites that the schools basically almost have to accept - they'd be hard pressed to justify their fiduciary duty with the difference in dollars between the ACC and $ec. If that happens the conference ship has just struck and iceberg and everyone left will be looking for a dry landing.
