Why Hunter?
I'm amazed at people's willingness to fund this stuff. The part that annoys me about this whole NIL situation is that we were told a few years ago that "people are getting rich over college sports; the athletes should get some of the revenue."
Now, instead of taking money from the people who were/are getting rich, they're asking for MORE money from donors in order to pay the kids.
So the people who were getting rich are still getting rich while they fleece fans, boosters, and supporters to get different money streams for the players.
No doubt. Especially when the opportunity to make money is so limited in women's professional basketball. Make hay while the sun shines, right? Why not? Every kid who other teams would want should do this. No professional player would voluntarily turn down a chance to be an unrestricted free agent, why would a “college” player?
Exactly. I hate it as a fan (and currently a much more apothetic fan) but if I were a player I'd do the same thing. Every year.No doubt. Especially when the opportunity to make money is so limited in women's professional basketball. Make hay while the sun shines, right?
There is something to that. Read what you posted and thought for a few minutes, and the last 4 years of college football seem like a blur. Same with basketball, although I don't follow it as close as I do football. When NIL kicked into full swing, there are Frogs who contributed that I have trouble remembering after they hit the portal.I'm amazed at people's willingness to fund this stuff.
College sports have become like the NBA, where the thing that moves the needle is off the court stuff.....player/coach movement, contracts, "NIL" deals, social media comments......and the really big one, gambling. I don't think who wins the actual games really means as much as it used to (outside of if spreads are covered).
I'm just an old timer I guess, but I could name you every national champion from about 1978-2000 and remember something from those teams that seem kind of iconic to me. I might be wrong, but I bet 90% of people who call themselves college basketball fans couldn't name the last five winners, maybe the last three. I know I couldn't unless I really thought about it hard or looked it up. LOL at being able to name more than a couple players from those teams. So it all seems so much more meaningless now. I think all these teams will be quickly forgotten relative to how it used to be.
considering how the WNBA is not making enough to cover the investment, can't blame a young lady for making sure she banks now.No doubt. Especially when the opportunity to make money is so limited in women's professional basketball. Make hay while the sun shines, right?
1981 - Indiana (beat UNC led by Isiah Thomas)There is something to that. Read what you posted and thought for a few minutes, and the last 4 years of college football seem like a blur. The new CBA is a big step up, but Dono seems more likely to become a coach than a pro, unless she goes international. She's been such a do-what's-needed player that I'm surprised to see her bounce...but good for her if she can get paid, perhaps have a higher-profile role, and learn from another coach. She's never not played in the Elite 8, so I can't see her going to a mid-tier team. Maybe she goes to Tennessee? Caldwell's press-all-the-time style fits her commitment to D, and they are in rescue mode with all the transfers there.considering how the WNBA is not making enough to cover the investment, can't blame a young lady for making sure she banks now.
laughing because I was trying to remember who the loser in the champ game was last year. you posted this list and I immediatly looked at 1984 because I remember Georgetown beat the Coogs. Then I immediatly remembered who lost last year. And now that I think about it, Coogs lost last year was a kick because they were leading by something like 12 points at one point and then kinda deflated late in the game.1981 - Indiana (beat UNC led by Isiah Thomas)
1982 - UNC (Jordan's shot, Fred Brown's pass, Ewing's freshman year, I remember him goaltending about 3-4 at the start)
1983 - NC State (Valvano, who can forget that?)
1984 - Georgetown (Ewing over Olajuwon)
1985 - Villanova (the miracle, shot like 75% from the field).
1986 - Louisville (Pervis Ellison, in Dallas)
1987 - Indiana (the Keith Smart shot)
1988 - Kansas (Danny and the Miracles)
1989 - Michigan (fired Frieder, Steve Fischer wins it all....Glen Rice & Rumeal Robinson)
1990 - UNLV (Runnin Rebels....Johnson, Augmon, Hunt, Anthony, etc...dominant)
Didn't have to look it up, all etched in memory. Those tournaments and games just seemed legendary compared to today. What will be memorable about Florida's win last year? Or whoever won the year before?
