TCU HC Takes Shot at Indiana QB Josh Hoover While Curt Cignetti Sees Glass Half Full

Spring football is supposed to be about fresh starts and clean slates, but Sonny Dykes isn’t exactly in the mood to sugarcoat the past, particularly surrounding his former QB. TCU opened camp with energy after a 9-4 finish, a new OC, and an altered roster. And yet, amid all that “new,” the head coach made sure to remind everyone what the “old” looked like, specifically, Josh Hoover.

“Stats are stats, and I think Josh started 31 games here as a quarterback,” Sonny Dykes told reporters on March 24. “And he turned the ball over 42 times in those 31 starts.”

Now, this is significant because Josh Hoover was the main guy in Fort Worth who had 31 straight starts that totaled 9,629 passing yards and 71 scores. In fact, no returning QB in college football had better raw production heading into 2026. But as Sonny Dykes reminded everyone, that’s not the whole story. While stat sheets record 33 interceptions in 31 starts, the coach’s evaluation includes all possessions lost, and 42 is an eyebrow-raising number. That lingering frustration never quite left the building, even after the QB’s departure.

Some of those were on Hoover. Some of those were on the OL that kept him under pressure and on the run way too much.

I like what I am hearing from and about the new guy, brings a new dimension to the position and says he always has a plan on where he is going with the ball.

Frogs social media showed Sonny talking to the team before they started practice yesterday. He mentioned the guys being bigger and stronger after the revamped lift program they had done for about 9 weeks.
Hopefully that translates for the trenches.

This not just about Hoover. This is also about the former OC. Yes there are many factors in those states that need addressing. The challenge for all concerned is to reduce turn overs. Sonny should have not laid it out so that it looks like Hoover is the only one responsible.

No offense, but it is easy to say that when the pass rush isn't knocking you on your ass every single pass attempt. I will believe our OL has improved when I see them block well against a live opponent in an actual game. I am so tired of the same ol' "We're going to push people around in the fall" nonsense. we hear every spring.

Yeah, I never really paid attention to hype before the season. As a wise philosopher once said, "Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth."

It's all good now, all the newcomers are going to be upgrades. We'll see what happens when there are missiles fired back in September.

I usually think Sonny is pretty savvy but that was a bush league comment. Small.
Meh. That's the world they live in now. Sonny et. al. showed Hoover a lot of good faith and invested a lot of time, energy and money into Hoover to be a QB at TCU, only to see him jump ship. I can understand that Sonny and others may still be a little salty about his departure. We'll never know, but it all boils down to "how" he departed, and not just his departure.

A change was needed at the QB position - which was best for TCU and Hoover. Hoover has a chance to start for the reigning national champ and prove he is not a TO machine in the right setting (or not), and TCU has a chance to reset with an experienced QB with different skills, and a new OC, whose specialty is developing a mean stout OL. Should be a win/win for both parties.

My question for Sonny is, as a supposed QB guru, why he couldn't use that supposed talent to develop Josh better. A lot of this is on Sonny himself.
When Hoover was recruited out of high school, he was pretty much an afterthought to our fan base. He was ranked the 41st QB in his class. 4 years later he was on his way to breaking some records at TCU and now he's one of the highest paid QBs in college football. I mean, he surely isn't perfect, but it seems like developed fairly well under Dykes and the staff.

99%^^^ Notice how Dykes Freudian slipped and said we....HE turned the ball over 42 times?? True that Hoover did not have best OL protection. Shows us all how inept the OL coaching was for the last few years.

As soon as a person or organization is satisfied with JR high OL play they are dead.

2nd Biggest PHUP with these comments about Hoover is not having the self reflect to realize you as the HC are ultimately responsible for the TO machine.

These are not necessarily the "times we are living in" A tried and true axiom by Leaders in business war politics during 1000s of years of History is that you shut down looking/talking about the Rear View Mirror.

Lmao this is blowing up on social media. I don’t understand, he literally just said the stat. If Hoover takes offense to that, then he’s soft. He has to know that is a perfectly valid critique of his play.

And not only that, the guy disappeared in big games. I challenge someone to go back and list his three top wins as a starting QB here.

I mean isn’t this also a shot at Dykes?! Isn’t Dykes in charge of who coaches and starts?! There was plenty of blame to go around with the disaster that was the past few seasons. This year for the Frogs it’s on Dykes. Others at their new places also have a ton to prove.
