Calls Mount Against Referee Over Controversial Penalty Handed to Sonny Dykes’ TCU​

Sonny Dykes’ TCU running back Jeremy Payne broke past the defense, picked up a clean first down across the Atlantic in Dublin, and casually walked back to the huddle. Then, out of nowhere, yellow cloth hit the grass. That single whistle quickly spiraled into the most talked-about play of college football’s opening weekend, leaving TCU on the losing end of a 15-10 heartbreaker to North Carolina.

With under 13 minutes left in the third quarter and TCU trailing 12-10, Payne took a handoff on first-and-10 from his own 39-yard line, cutting left for a tough seven-yard gain. He moved the chains to the UNC 46, giving the Horned Frogs fresh momentum. But instead of letting the team line up for the next snap, the referee stepped in and tossed a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct flag.

There was another UNC on the sidelines after a first down gain that was identical to Paynes move and I was screaming at the TV for it to be called. NCAA needs to get it together. WTH - that was chicken crap.

It's always visiting team's conference officials for interconference games. TCU didn't "allow" anything.

I wouldn't do this arrangement. There is a mountain of evidence showing bias. Another reason to keep non-con games as pre season (easy opponents) because this crap shows up in the "playoff" committee's reasoning which is drivel.

Last I looked there is no pre-season on CFB. Were you complaining last year when Big 12 officials worked the game in Chapel Hill? It’s the way it works. Also if you think that TCU has to worry about what the committee might think you really are lost. The officials were not the reason the Frogs lost that game. Time to stop whining and move on

The fix was in. The ACC officials knew that UNC had to win. They did their part. TCU didn't play well enough to keep it out of their hands.

Also if you think that TCU has to worry about what the committee might think you really are lost. The officials were not the reason the Frogs lost that game. Time to stop whining and move on

Going forward.... Indiana plays cupcakes in non-conference. I am referring to non-conference as pre-season. Conference play as the real season. There is little benefit to playing other P4 competition in non-conference play. The officials are another data point against P4s in non-conference. ESPN is no one's friend. I'm sure Sonny has figured this out.

Didn’t see the Payne call but was screaming at the TV when they called that first holding penalty. So weak.

Also, why in the name of all that’s holy would you ever draw an offsides call on a kickoff when your guy is putting it out of the back of the end zone every time? There are bad penalties, there are dumb penalties, and then there’s that. Obviously the 5 yards aren’t a huge deal, but that just screams bad coaching, especially considering I told my wife on the previous kickoff that we had a guy flirting with offsides…and it was the same guy.
