ESPN: Top of Big 12 could be historically bad

By David Ubben | ESPN.com

Phil Steele is one of the best in the business when it comes to all things college football, and he released his projected AP preseason top 10

for 2013.

How many Big 12 teams cracked the list? A big, fat zero. It's not a huge surprise (we'll get to that in a bit), but I took a look through the history books and realized an alarming truth: This could be the worst group of Big 12 title contenders in the preseason in the league's history.

Since the Big 12 began play in 1996, there has never been a year in which the league failed to place a team in the AP preseason top 10. There have, I should mention, been two seasons in which no current Big 12 members were in the AP preseason top 10. ...

Not really a surprise. The top of the B12 wasn't impressive last year either. Seems like a bunch of teams worthy of a 10-35 ranking.

Historically bad? I doubt it. Everyone was saying the 2012 Big East was the worst BCS conference of all time -- until Louisville stomped Florida.

Somebody is going to put it all together in 2013, whether it's Oklahoma, TCU or, God forbid, Texas.

I hope at least one team is elite... I'm worried OSU, TCU and UT will all be 9-10 win teams at the top of the conference.

Well at least, for the final time, the conference champion will get a big bowl pay day no matter how bad they are.

I think 2012 and 2010 were arguably the two worst Big XII's (at the top of the conference).

With so many QBs graduating this year, next year could be weak at the top as well. Perfect chance for TCU to make a statement.

Never know though

Just need everybody around TCU campus to do their job and keep an eye on Casey and feed our Olinemen food and steroids/deer antlers.

Anyone else notice how he called TCU "possibly the most talented team in the Big 12"? When have you ever thought you'd hear that?

I love the round robin format, but as long as the Big 12 sticks with it there will likely only be 1 or 2 teams from the Big 12 in the top 10. As long as the SEC keeps their 14 team-8 game format they'll have 4 or 5 teams in the top 10 every year.

I agree with your statement, however I do not like the round robin for the reason you gave, other conferences have an advantage over the Big 12 because of their schedule...mainly the SEC is always well rested and always gets plenty of game plan time. The round robin is good to play everyone but it gives no time for rest or preparation.
