Only two players in the top 50 transferred to a private school. Private schools appear to not be able to compete with the behemoth state school money.
Should we just play club football or continue to hope for 8 or maybe 9 win seasons with no hope of a conference or national playoff spot
Private schools have always faced unique challenges when trying to remain consistently competitive at the highest level of college football, and yes college football's current form highlights those challenges (especially for smaller private schools).
However, your data is wrong and the actual numbers don't support the idea that private schools can't compete.
The transfer portal closed Jan. 16. Here's your guide to the best players on the move this offseason.

Of the top 50 in the portal:
- All 50 transferred to major conference schools (ACC, Big12, BigTen, SEC, Notre Dame)
- 8 transferred to private schools (3 to Miami, 2 to USC, 1 to Baylor, 1 to Vandy, 1 to Notre Dame).
So 16% transferred to private schools, while private schools account for only 13 of the 68 schools in the major conferences (19%). Seems like what occurred is about what should be expected.
