ESPN - Is Andy Dalton a franchise quarterback?

The Cincinnati Bengals don't need to draft a quarterback in the first round this year. They don't need to sign a free agent to replace quarterback Andy Dalton.

What the Bengals need to do is figure out whether Dalton is a franchise quarterback by the end of the 2013 season. That's a valid question after Dalton flopped for a second straight season in the playoffs and took a step back in his second NFL season.

Andy Dalton has never won a road playoff game in two attempts. The Cincinnati Bengals organization has never won a road playoff game period. Does Andy have the stuff to be a franchise QB in the NFL? At the New York Giants, perhaps not. I don't know. At Cincinnati, yes. If their expectations ought to be higher, history has not proved such.

I'm starting to have my doubts, but two seasons taking cinci to the playoffs and losing in the first round is not a large enough sample size. I do know that if it is possible, AD will make it happen...

Cincy, after years of irrelevancy, is taken to the playoffs in back-to-back years and they want to shoot the guy responsible? The OC gameplan in Houston was horrible, with Andy only throwing the ball 10 times in the first half, and a non-existent running game against one of the best run defenses in the league.

Was I supposed to type something here?
He physically hit his receivers with the football. They just got all stone-hands and dropped many of them.

Maybe they can get Doug Free... That'd cure those pesky blocking problems...

Not to mention the interception caused by Green not sticking his hands out to catch the ball (never looked back). Absolutely perfect pass, but resulted in an interception to kill a drive. Andy made a couple of bad passes, but his receivers killed him this week.

A better O line will always make a big difference, but the receivers should get a fair bit of credit for this most recent mess...

Dalton had one bad throw, where he overthrew Green for the game winning TD. Good thread on Jungle Noise, about it.

[background=rgb(238, 238, 238)]Andy Dalton: For the first half Dalton was playing the pass game by himself. I remember one pass in particular on a 3rd and 11 where dalton spun out of a Watt sack and scrambled to his right. He threw a ROPE on the move to Andrew Hawkins and instead of running back to the ball, like any receiver would, he waited for the ball and it got knocked down. All year long Andy's receivers have let him down, and it makes people think he is much worse than he is. He got pressured all day, and when he finally had time he had to take coverage sacks. NO ONE would get open for him. Andy is only to blame for that last throw which was off by feet. Tough break. "[/background]

It's funny, though. A couple of people there just want Dalton gone. They blame him 100% for the loss.

The texans decided to play the kind of defense they did earlier in the year and Cincinnati with that swiss cheese of an offensive line and receivers that fail their QB (AJ GREEN is part of that list, the INT is 100% on him) it's not surprising he does bad against good defensive teams. Also horrible play calling and a bad head coach

Dalton deserves another year. But at times he's been brutal this year.

+1. Quit making excuses for Andy. Sometimes he has looked outstanding. Sometimes he has stunk it up. Yes, he doesn't have the best OL. Yes, he has been victimized by drops. But he still had opportunities to put his team in a position to win the game and he ultimately failed. I think he will be the first to admit to that. He was terribly inconsistent this year. Knowing what I know of him he'll work hard on correcting his flaws and come back a very good QB next year. It's a lot like his '10 season. '09 was good but there was definite room for improvement. I saw several practices in August of '10 and couldn't believe I was looking at the same QB. I saw a more determined and focused QB and he led our guys to a magical season. I don't see any reason to think he won't be able to take his game to the next level in '13.
