Looking closer at Big 12 early departures

Headscratchers: Stansly Maponga

Maponga is best suited to hear his name called pretty early in the draft, but the Frogs' best preseason standout was banged up this season and definitely could have improved his stock with a strong season in a major conference as a senior in 2013. He was overshadowed by teammate Devonte Fields, a fellow defensive lineman, and managed just 6.5 tackles for loss, the fourth-most for the Frogs. He had just four sacks after making nine a season ago.

The replacements:
  • LaDarius Brown, WR, TCU: Brown is a huge target for whoever TCU lines up at quarterback. The 6-foot-4, 220-pounder caught 27 passes for 385 yards. Brandon Carter is the more immediate option as the team's best target without Josh Boyce and Skye Dawson, but Brown's potential is sky-high. Look for him to get tons of targets in the red zone next season.

As good as Boyce was, I think we will be okay at WR. Not so sure about replacing Maponga.

Agreed. DL now becomes more of a question mark whereas at the end of 2012, it was the biggest strength on the team (as a unit) going into 2013. This is not to say the DL won't be fine.

Although you can't teach experience, we do have some younger defensive players with a great upside, Our ace in the hole is the coaching ability of Bumpas and Patterson to get them to their full potentials.

LD Brown is one of my top five favorite current players, not only because of his on field presence/potential, but because of everything he's overcame to get here.

I agree with your overall point but I'd say that our secondary was our best unit in 2012.

LDB has the physical size to dominate a game. I would like to see more of a dominating attitude from him going forward.

I really wish LDB would have held on to that TD pass in the End Zone at the BWW Bowl. Hopefully that one haunts him all off season and inspires him to work that much harder.

Agreed, but they'll need to come on quick at the end opposite Fields. Devonte's going to be double-teamed (or triple-teamed) from the first snap until we prove we're dangerous on both sides.

We are going to need one of our freshmen recruits to step up as well. Hopefully we can grab some more D-lineman and OL to round out this class.
