Sources: Boise State staying in MWC

Updated: December 31, 2012, 2:48 PM ETBy Brett McMurphy | ESPN

Boise State will remain a member of the Mountain West Conference and will not join the Big East in 2013, sources told ESPN on Monday.

The Broncos' decision on Monday is the latest crippling blow to the Big East Conference, which has had 14 schools announce they were leaving the league in the past two years.

The Broncos will remain a Mountain West member in all sports instead of joining the Big East next year as a football-only member and the Big West in all other sports.

Though Boise State never spent a day in the Big East, the Broncos still must pay a $10 million exit fee to the Big East. The Mountain West is expected to help pay that fee, sources said.

As devastating as Boise State's decision is to the Big East, it's just as big a boost to the future of the Mountain West.

Wonder what San Diego State is thinking about right now?
And SMU... And UH...With the Tech trolls out in force bragging about how much money they get from other programs accomplishments I dont have the energy to roam their boards for schadenfreude sake.

Both are stuck. They are too cheap to pay the fine and noone is going to help either pay it to sign them up.

There are all sorts of rumors on the NCAAbbs/Big East board that I looked at. Rumors include:

1. MWC teams will be paid appearance fees under their new TV contract(s), effecting an unequal division of conference revenue to Boise's benefit.

2. All sorts of rumors about what, if anything, BE exit fees will be, and how much the MWC will directly or indirectly pay.

3. Rumors that SDSU is not an automatic "in" for the MWC-- probably a negotiating strategy involving BE exit fees that SDSU is contractually excused from (supposedly) if there are no remaining BE teams west of the Rockies. SDSU might have to pay some of the expense of extracting Boise from the BE for SDSU to get back into the MWC.

4. Etc., etc.

Thank you Jesus for A&M's institutional nervous breakdown that made a place for us in the B12.

So, does the Beast now call it a day or are there enough fat cats that still care to maintain some awkward, synthetic entity that will allow them to maintain their payday and Leopard Club Gold Room access?
