THSCA urging colleges to not compete with Texas high school football on Friday nights

Story by Greg Riddle, The Dallas Morning News

SAN ANTONIO — The Texas High School Coaches Association is the largest state coaches association in America, with 27,529 members. It is trying to throw its weight around to keep college football games from being played on Friday nights in Texas so high schools can continue to have center stage.

The THSCA is particularly upset that Houston is playing at TCU at 6:30 p.m. Friday Oct. 4 on ESPN. That is Week 6 of the UIL regular season.

“We will continue to voice our concern and displeasure with conference commissioners regarding live FBS football on Friday night in this state during our regular season,” THSCA executive director Joe Martin said during his organization’s 92nd annual convention and coaching school.

doesn't change that playing Friday nights is for mid-tiers...makes it even worse that we are playing Coug High on a Friday....

My uninformed guess is that all of college football, even the tOSUs and Bamas of this world, will be playing on Friday evenings/nights as the networks do their best to fund unbelievably, mind-boggling payouts to college sports.

Sux but the money calls.

I seem to recall this same plea from this association before last season and maybe the year before that. Should be an annual occurrence moving forward.

I agree with this. I also think we should get back to tv coverage on Thursdays being the smaller college games, as in folks like Stephen F. Austin, etc.

Will be seen by millions of people rather than 100k on a Saturday. All press is good press. I'm guessing impact to high schools will be just about zero...been hearing the whining for 20 years.
you think? want to find the games on Friday night that were not bowl games or the PAC conference championship that had "Millions" of viewers vs games we played on a Saturday with 100k....how about this - [ deposit from a bull that looks like Art Briles ]

I don't want to play on Fridays, but the THSCA doesn't pay the Big XII's bills.

I would urge the THSCA members to read more history books so they're not as rubbish at the non-coaching parts of their jobs, but they'd probably respond that teaching history isn't what actually keeps their lights on at home. This is kind of like that.

Check me if I'm wrong, but Friday night college games have been going on for 20 years or more. And hate to break it to the sports world, but you're going to start seeing all kinds of things you never used to see now that college sports are suckling all out on the almighty dollar teat.
