TCU football 2025 recruiting hub: Sonny Dykes brings in top class in the Big 12

Sarah Smith

As TCU’s regular season came to a close with a win at Cincinnati, a few Horned Frogs have declared their intent to enter the transfer portal. Shad Banks Jr. and Jamel Johnson are two notable players to enter.

With players hitting the portal and seniors leaving, it’s time for the Horned Frogs to replace lost latest with recruits.

Here’s what to know about TCU’s 2025 recruiting class.

TCU’s 2025 recruiting class

No. of signees: 29
Current 247 Composite team ranking: 20th
How the Horned Frogs measure up to the rest of the Big 12: 1st

Best current commit: WR Terry Shelton

Shelton comes in as TCU’s No. 1 recruit. The four-star recruit from Carrollton Ranchview has playmaking abilities and speed that make him an incredible asset in TCU’s receiving core.

Breaking down his 2024 film, 6-4 Shelton has outran DBs and stays locked on the ball while bringing down contested catches. His size and physicality on the field blend with the Horned Frogs’ current receiving core and plays similarly to TCU’s Jack Bech.

Best under-the-radar commit: DB Gil Jackson

The Missouri City DB Gil Jackson has landed under school’s radars and was previously committed to Texas Tech before flipping to TCU. Jackson possesses a fluidity and skill level when locking up high school receivers that mimic DBs at the next level.

This ability to mirror receivers’ routes and cover them soft or locked on also show he can compete at the next level and will benefit from TCU’s talented secondary unit. With a chunk of TCU’s DBs graduating or transferring out, this gives Jackson a chance to prove himself and maybe see some action come next fall.

Biggest remaining need: OL

Even with four offensive line signees, TCU still needs help in that department. This season’s offensive line struggled to get the run game going and it wasn’t until OC Kendal Briles started running the Savion Williams package that it saw success.

The OL struggled due to the majority of the players being transfers. It takes time to build chemistry and trust in one another. Three of the five starting offensive linemen have eligibility left and haven’t mentioned any intent to transfer. This will help the four recruits grow and find their place on the squad.

TCU’s result as an 8-4 season didn’t come easy and the early OL struggles poisoned their chance at a Big 12 Championship run and made the offense rely too heavily on QB Josh Hoover’s passing.

Glad we held on to everyone! Tech was pushing really really hard to flip Woodfork. Only blemish is losing the dual threat QB to smew. Other than that, and not landing a couple more OL, this is a fantastic class.

It’s just not true!
Here is the real situation at OL.
Everyone on the current OL is returning to my knowledge.
Plus Cade Bennett will be added back. Now add Camacho, Harvey, Hodnett, Hughes, & Steppes coming off Fresh./Red Shirt.. Now add in 4 more 300 lbers in this current class, and we’ll likely find another IOL in the portal.
OL is nowhere close to the biggest need.

Don’t think the list above is up to date. Jacobe Hayes is signed and not listed. (3 star WR from Mansfield).

not sure if there are any others. Just noticed that one since he’s friends w my son and weve been following his flip from University of North Texas and silent this last week.

That’s weird. We definitely offered. I don’t believe 247 shows that he has committed anywhere yet.

Don't think the writer knew Taylor-Whitfield took over the stating RT about mid-season. 4 of 5 returning, Cade Bennett coming back from injury and Robert Hughes played LT significantly behind Bless.

I assume the author is referring to Bless Harris and Mike Nicholls not returning.
She obviously did not do any research before writing the article, as losing those 2 doesn‘t come anywhere close to making it a strategic need to replace.
When you have 14 rotatable returnees on OL, you’re sitting pretty good.
When this season started, TCU only had 7 to 8 rotatable OLs. There‘s no comparison to where we sit today.
