Is 5+11 the way to go? CFP committee has a lot to consider amid 16-team format debate

If a 16-team playoff in the 2026 season feels inevitable, we might as well get to it.

Considering international diplomacy has been reduced to the level of discourse in junior high locker rooms, if that, it’s only fitting we can’t seem to get a College Football Playoff format without somebody hurting someone else’s feelings. Brett Yormark, grand poobah of the Big 12, advises the Big Ten and SEC to do “what’s right” for everyone, while Greg Sankey, SEC czar, counters he doesn’t need “lectures on the good of the game.”

For sure, because no one in charge of anything has the game’s best interests in mind, though that’s a lecture for another day.

Maybe even last week, if you’ll recall.

Is BY acquiescing and relegating us to Tier II status?
Just care about TCU. If there are 2 spots for Big 12 then the Frogs will have a great chance to get one every year. We had it great as BCS buster. Now we are Buster with a lot more money. Quit worrying about we are not Texas. BY can hold his breath until he turns blue but it won’t change things. Whatever system they come up with will work (for us) if TCU has access to it. TCU has advantages over most of Big 12.

joel klatt goes on a long rant about what's wrong with the proposed 5/11 formula where the five highest ranked conference champions get automatic bids along with eleven at-large teams selected by the cfp committee. his negative cfp committee points are appropriate.

We should take the sport out of the boardroom and define the criteria a little more clearly on what it should take to make the CFP.

but the remainder of the column is senseless to me favoring a 4 sec/4 b10/2 acc/2 b12/4 at-large format. why in the world would the acc and b12 want to yield four automatic slots each to the sec and b10? that suggests this league is half as good as theirs. the problem here has always been the committee which is clearly influenced by outside forces including tv ratings and propaganda. get rid of the committee in favor of a preset formula and one major 'subjective' problem goes away. the whole issue here has always been the committee. mike leach explained that at the onset.

i also find it interesting that the sec favors the 5/11 scheme while the b10 wants 4/4/2/2/4 to assure it gets four slots. the fact they are coming down on different sides of the same question is good for the rest of us.

Why does everyone think OU is going to be so good this year? Because the Boomers beat Bama last year? This is just another example of Blue Bloods getting a whole bunch of love in the preseason. They have the worst coach in the SEC. Why would anyone believe in Venables?

Exactly. In another season or two, he may be back at Clemson as DC where he did an amazing job.

The preseason stuff is laughable. Everyone assumes Texas will walk on water. Had they been called for targeting in the playoffs, ASU would have advanced to the semis.
I do think Notre Dame will be really good this year.

The ongoing, seemingly endless prattle about championships and playoffs along with the SEC's self-absorbed worldview has finally pushed me to make an overdue decision.

FOR SALE: One Pre-Owned Shiv-a-Gitter™ – Lightly Charred, Heavily Tested

Are you constantly trapped in never-ending conversations that circle the drain of indecision like a buzzard over bad barbecue? Do you find yourself nodding politely while someone re-explains their deeply held opinion for the 14th time, slightly louder and with more hand gestures?

Well, friend, I used to be like you… until I got me a Shiv-a-Gitter™.

This miracle of modern emotional hardware used to slice clean through circular logic, passive-aggression, and “just one more thing” syndrome. Powered by equal parts sarcasm, eye twitches, and three decades of being nice, this trusty unit once shut down an entire staff meeting with a single sigh.

But now?

Well… she’s about wore out. Smoke curls up from the listening port. The empathy gauge is stuck on "low battery." And every time someone says “let’s unpack that,” it lets out a faint groan and starts trembling like a wet chihuahua in a thunderstorm.

So, if you’re still young, hopeful, or just one conversation short of hollering at a ficus, this slightly-used Shiv-a-Gitter™ might be just the tool for you.

Includes:
  • One frayed tolerance wire
  • Three pre-programmed “Uh-huh”s
  • Optional “blunt honesty” override switch (use with caution)
Does not include patience. That’s on you.

Asking: $5 or best offer. Might consider trade for a functional pair of noise-canceling earbuds or a getaway plan.
