DMN: Future of SMU vs. TCU isn’t set in stone as college football landscape changes

BrewingFrog

Was I supposed to type something here?
Was The Carter sold out for any conference BIG game the last several years? Hell no! Spare me the claim that only big time opponents will draw the crowds and appeal to ME! It does not work that way. Who designates which school is big time? We've had quality schools here in recent years. Stop the whining! Go Frogs!
Where did I specify "big time"? I merely beseeched the Lords of Future Scheduling to stop selecting absolutely overmatched teams as opponents. I set forth my reasons why. Additionally, at no time did I mention "sellout" or anything like it. I asked for "compelling" matchups to draw casual fans, not body-bag games where the outcome was certain when it was scheduled.

I cannot see the benefit of scheduling teams we will beat the living crap out of. It is meaningless to us, and cruel to the team being annihilated on the field. Sure, they go home with a nice paycheck, but as a salty old coach of ours once remarked, "It was like clubbing baby seals."

SMU is fine as an opponent. In Amon Carter. Hell, cut them a check for travel expenses, but traveling to Dallas is for the birds. Otherwise, let them go and play in Gainesville, or Tuscaloosa, or Baton Rouge in week two. Doesn't cost us a thing. They'll heal. Eventually.

To wish to upgrade things isn't arrogance, it's business. There isn't a casual fan out there who gives a parboiled crap about buying tickets and driving an hour to sit in traffic to see Tarleton State have their heads bashed in. Get an opponent with a pulse, someone who we can at least gauge ourselves against. May not be the most compelling matchup of the week, but it beats having, say, Incarnate Word.
There was a big crowd at Tarleton St game including most of Stephenville.

I do want us to get rid of the FCS games. It is a waste of money for us season ticket holders.
As a club season ticket holder, I do not mind the FCS teams, especially since 90% of P5 schools schedule one yearly. However, I prefer local teams (Tarleton/Abilene Christian) or “famous” teams (Grambling/Southern) vs teams of no interest (Duquesne), IMO.

Saying that, I wouldn’t mind getting to a point of “buy” games vs FBS schools. The main issue of “buy” games for a FBS opponent comes down to $$, IMO. FBS schools usually are 2-3 times more for a game vs a FCS school, and won’t bring much in attendance unless it’s a local school, and I think you can only say that about a couple local teams. So, is the cost/benefit there for TCU?

No reason to play FCS when you have UTSA, UTEP, University of North Texas, Texas State and Rice in state. Maybe add Tulane, ULM or ULaLa every once in a while.
I don’t disagree with you, but at what cost? Those schools usually cost 2-3 times what a FCS school costs for a buy game. Again, if it works in the athletics budget, then I hope they pursue it.

The arrogance of some of you posters make it sound like we're Alabama and have won the National Championship several times recently. I believe in upgrading our schedule some but 8-9 home games and no FCS is selfish and un-Christian as is our name. Spread the wealth that TCU has earned and been given. SMU has taken some of that prestige that so much of you adore. Let's earn it back!
Go Frogs!

Ah. Did you catch what you said? "WE pay big bucks for these seats" Your correct, I pay them too. But the contract between the two schools TCU and "fill in the blank" helps pay there athletic budget for all of their sports for that school year. Have you not given their financial struggles keeping players and coaches in school any thought? It's the BIG picture not just TCU's. Go Frogs!
Speaking for myself, I don't give thousands of dollars per year to the Frog Club to "share the wealth" with other programs. I give it to support TCU, and nobody but TCU. Socialism and intercollegiate football, which is an inherently a competitive enterprise, are incompatible bedfellows.

I get the feeling that Putt4Purple just woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning. Christian folk have enough to worry about (in the WOKE world) without being asked to feel guilty about a college football team's scheduling procedures.
Get off my lawn !!!!

I support the idea of not playing SMU in Dallas in the future. I don’t understand why playing University of North Texas or Rice or another body bag game.

I was at the last TCU-University of North Texas game when LT was going strong. It was a joke & worse - a snooze fest. There were maybe 12,000 people at ACS & we were all bored sick. Frog’s totally shut them down & our offense was give it to LT all the time.

It was so boring that I didn’t go back to ACS the rest of that year. Can’t imagine it would be any better now.

You are worried ab cost? Kinda strange considering the amount the football program puts in. Maybe I misread your post

IMO the game against SMU needs to stay, and the way they do it now is fine. College football needs more games like it, not fewer.

FBS teams shouldn’t play FCS teams. If paying them so they can fund their programs is so important just find a way to get that done without wasting everyone’s time by playing actual games.

It would nice if every school was forced to play at least 5 true road games every year, that would almost immediately fix the scheduling problem. And I realize that will probably never happen, although the networks could surely force it if they wanted to.

I like them

yes it’s a cheesehead move, but some schools use it as a bye week.

start some of the backups.

Rest the starters.

allows those with good tickets to take guests that normally don’t get to go to the conference games

adds a win to bowl eligibility. Remember when the Frogs used to go every year?
