City, AT&T, SMU plan championship golf complex in southern Dallas

The city of Dallas, in partnership with AT&T and Southern Methodist University, is planning the development of a 400-acre championship golf complex in the heart of southern Dallas.

The deal, to be announced at a news conference Friday morning, is proposed as a major boost to the city’s southern side and could bring golf events to Dallas, including major championships and the HP Byron Nelson Championship, Mayor Mike Rawlings said.

“There’s a huge sports component of this, not unlike moving Rangers Stadium or Cowboys Stadium to Dallas,” he said. “We will have a first-class, world-championship golf course.”


If completed as envisioned, the complex will include an 18-hole, semi-private championship course, a nine-hole beginner’s course, a practice facility and a clubhouse built on old landfill property just east of Interstate 45 along Loop 12. Plans call for work to start next spring, with the main course ready for play in spring 2016.

SMU would use the course as an anchor facility for its golf program.........

Why can't TCU do this like UT and Tech, and SMU?

Why do they (TCU) need to do this??? The TCU team plays Colonial, Shady Oaks, RiverCrest, Ridglea and MiraVista. They also can call any pro shop in the Metroplex and get on for free.​

They also have practice privileges at Leonard's Golf Links...arguably the best practice range/facility in the Metroplex. There are also plans to build their own practice facility by Lupton.​

A "branded" home course would be cool, but not sure where you would put it and it's definitley not a neccesity.​

That was true 20 years ago. Not so true now.

The facilities arms race in golf has left TCU playing a game of catch up. It's starting to show in our performance. Once a perrenial top 15 team, TCU has struggled to maintain that.

Not many courses are making money. This deal will only work if the Byron Nelson moves and stays there, and I still question its long-term viability.

Without knowing the terms of this deal, I wonder if this pie is being divided too many ways.

Not going to happen. There are a couple options on the table but not the highest priority currently
