Detroit Free Press: Don't be surprised to see Michigan State's quarterbacks on the run

EAST LANSING -- Michigan State quarterback Andrew Maxwell has been taking hits in practice and studying the TCU defense that will try to hit him often in the Dec. 29 Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl.

The Horned Frogs run a mix of zone and man coverage that "not a lot of teams do," he said -- citing Alabama's defense from two years ago as the last he saw with a steady diet of it. MSU offensive coordinator Dan Roushar said TCU's defensive ends are the best his offense will see this season.

The big question for Michigan State is whether it will attack that defense with any significant wrinkles. Roushar confirmed Thursday that his team has been working on designed quarterback runs that likely will be featured more in the future.

"Whether we're good enough right now to go execute on a high level in a game-like situation, I think that'll be determined by how we continue to practice down in Arizona," Roushar said. ...

The contrasting styles between the TCU and

Michigan State coaching staffs regarding the

distribution of team news/information is

interesting. Gary's dearth of information would

make the folks at Langley envious.

On info, there are multiple schools of thought but I prefer the "flood the media" strategy of talking incessantly about what you might do or are thinking about doing. It gives the fans some grist to yap about and some material to think/fantasize about during the long layoff. I doubt we see more than a.couple.of wrinkles from either team, but MSU fans will have had a much more enjoyable layoff than TCU fans because their staff is not.afraid to "think out loud" about stuff they run past during skull sessions. Sure, we might see the MSU QB use a couple of designed keepers--but it won't replace what they've done all season. In fact, we'll probably spend more effort in trying to plan for it than they will in installing it. And in that vein, it's not a.bad strategy.

The mere fact he's talking means he's got a lot on his mind..

Anyway, it is easy for him to "John Wayne" talk all he wants, since he doesn't have to take the field.
