Big 12 running back rankings: Who has the best backfield group in the league?

Story by Brandon Judd

Unlike at quarterback, where more than half of the Big 12 teams have a returning signal caller in the upcoming season, the running back position will look a lot different league-wide in 2025.

Of the Big 12’s 31 NFL draft picks in April, six of them were running backs.

Gone are guys like Arizona State’s Cam Skattebo, UCF’s RJ Harvey and Texas Tech’s Tahj Brooks, who all finished in the top 10 in rushing yards in the country last season.

Accurate…hopefully just for now.

Seems pretty apparent that Palmer and Payne are 1A & 1B, followed by Battle, and then the UTSA transfer in goal line and short to-go scenarios. I’ll be curious what they decide to do with Denman. Do they redshirt him? Does he surprise the staff and make a case for PT? I think he has the highest ceiling of any RB we’ve had since Miller.

If true about Denman, then you have to give him some playing time or he will be elsewhere next season most likely.

I'm not sure that's how our 2 deep will play out. We will probably have a 1a and 1b and 2a-2c.

Not sure how Palmer's spring work went, but had heard he was going to shine. Payne should do well. Barnes is a question mark. He seemed to have an off year last season, but that could have been due to o-line issues, etc. If he get comfortable enough to blast it like it did a couple of seasons ago, it should be fun.
