Dana Holgorsen to TCU?

It’s official: TCU adds Holgorsen to the staff. But he’s not the only one. They also hired Todd Graham. That’s two huge hires for this staff.

Their roles are not what you think they are though. Holgorsen will be a defensive analyst, and Graham will be an offensive analyst. The idea is that they are going to try to find weaknesses and provide perspectives on how to game plan around those weaknesses.

Win now or risk getting left out. Have to outspend everyone else right now.
This.

The 2024 season will be a barometer for the B12 moving forward in the changing landscape of conferences. If TCU can help lead the way it will not only help the perception of the B12 nationally, but also position the school well if this move to larger conferences proceeds and the carousel continues. 2022 was laughed away by everyone nationally following the end of the NC game and further cemented as a fluke due to the dismal 2023 season.

We HAVE to bounce back this year.

Patterson's 4-2-5 defense required players that would stick around in the system and put in the time to handle its steep learning curve. Post-portal and NIL Patterson lacked the right staff and ability to mold players long enough before they started looking for greener pastures, and as a result his defenses suffered. I don't think offenses are as affected by the new landscape of college football as Patterson's scheme and coaching style. Are things different now? Yes. Does all of Holgorsen's experience and offensive "genius" get thrown out due to those changes? No.
GP's downfall was his recruiting. His last strong defense was 2017 when Baker and the Boomers beat us in Norman and in Dallas. We had Ben B. and LJ playing DE and we could rush 4 and get good pressure consistently. After that season, GP lost his recruiting edge and we soon watched us play 215 and 195 pound DEs and he had to move S to LBs. Our D became small in the front six and teams just pounded us in the running game.

The scheme was fine, but the guys playing it post 2017 simply were not good enough to make it work.

So Holgo, an offensive mind, is analyzing defense which he isn’t very good at?

Yep. We're going to find out how good this coaching staff is this year. Obviously player leadership and execution is necessary, but we have plenty of talent for the schedule we're playing. Dykes needs to show us what he's made of, and TCU football needs that to go well.
