I have been confused by this ruling in the past as well. I think it might be a judgement call based on whether the ref thinks it was intentional?

A fumble can't be advance if the ball goes forward out of bounds. Recovered in the field of play is fine. (I'm 99% sure that's how it works)

Also makes sense. On a side note, I've seen similar plays ruled incomplete passes. Ex. Flaccos td pass to jones today

In the nfl any player may advance a fumble except on 4th down or in the last two minutes when only the player fumbling may advance it. The bit about a fumble going OB is also true.

Well when you said "advance", I didn't know if it meant run with it after possession was gained (after the fumble)
