MIAMI -- The Rose and Sugar bowls will host college football's first national semifinals on Jan. 1, 2015, with the AT&T Cotton Bowl a "prohibitive favorite" to host the national title game on Jan. 12, 2015, sources said Monday.

Under the 12-year deal, which begins after the 2014 season, the Rose Bowl Game presented by Vizio and Allstate Sugar Bowl will be played on Jan. 1 every season, whether they are hosting the national semifinals or not.

During the 12-year contract, the Rose and Sugar will host the semifinals four times. In the years they aren't hosting, the national semifinals would be moved from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, sources said.

The only exceptions would be on Sunday, Jan. 1, 2017 and Jan. 1, 2023, when the Rose and Sugar would move to Dec. 31, 2016 and Dec. 31, 2022, respectively. If the Rose and Sugar don't host the semifinals in those two seasons, the national semifinals would be played on Dec. 30, 2016 and Dec. 30, 2022. Six bowls, also to include the Orange, will rotate as hosts for the national semifinals. The other three have not been officially determined. Sources told ESPN they would be the Cotton, Tostitos Fiesta and Chick-fil-A bowls.

Jan. 12th? Good grief.

I wish they would just play the championship game on Jan 1st in Pasadena and be done with it. Pretty soon we'll have college football games in February.

And this is a problem for you?

It will be if TCU ever makes it into the Final Four.

How many people can afford to take time off to travel to the Sugar Bowl, and then more time off the next week to travel to the championship game? The whole point of doing these things around Christmas and New Years is so people can actually travel to see them.

If we make final four I will be at both games and will deplete all vacation, drive through the night, whatever to make the games.

I'd prefer the college football season to go from September to May.

You're in the minority. Most people have jobs and/or kids, and would prefer these games to happen at a time that doesn't completely interrupt their lives.

It's not about the fans. It'll mimic a Super Bowl atmosphere. Corporate seats, celebs, media, and anyone rich who is attracted to the "in events." fans will be placed in corners. That is if jerrah actually provides them with seats or just charges them for the tickets again. The "tradition" of bowls which was supposedly so important to these guys will be further subverted to make room for sterile corporate media driven events.

I hate the new playoff already. And what idiot thought it was a good idea to keep Bill Hancock as the face of the postseason?

To paraphrase Michael Scott: if I had a gun with only two bullets in a room with Hitler, Bin Laden, and Bill Hancock; I'd shoot Bill twice.

I am going to assume this refers to the Cotton Bowl game played in Cowboys Stadium, not to the old stadium in downtown Dallas that still bears that name.

There will be an ice storm.

Jerry wiil set up 12K extra portable seats that are unsafe.

There will be a flyover with the roof closed.

Christina Agulerra will miss sing the National Anthem.

Some currently popular talentless group will jump around and scream during halftime.

Oh wait.........

Actually, you're both in the minority.

The majority of fans will be planted in front of their TVs.

Which is all the powers-that-be are really interested in. Bowl games became giant TV studios long ago.

No problem for anyone who has traditional M-F employment, or at least with the ability to free up weekends. I realize that isn't everyone, but I'd believe it's the majority. You don't need vacation time to fly (or drive depending on where it is) somewhere on a Friday evening and back on a Sunday. This is what I did for the home games I got to come back for this season.

This would make me a happy J-Sauce. I'd probably prefer it to end in March to give time to enjoy the only college basketball I truly enjoy, and the meat of the college baseball season.

You don't want that. That's how long European soccer seasons last. The off-season isn't even long enough to get over the emotional turmoil of the season let along start actually pining for game days. No one's ever accused me of not being sufficiently into my soccer team, but even I get kind of sick of it al after nine months. College gamedays are so special precisely because there are so few of them and the season is so short. No game should be played before Sept. 1 of after Jan 1. Every extra week they tack on, and every extra bowl game between 6-6 teams only devalues the whole show as far as I'm concerned.

Tell me this in July when I'm rounding up the area elementary kids trying to teach them how to run a play action pass while I wear a purple shirt with #4 painted on it and referring to myself in 3rd person as Casey.

And how many on here actually believe the new playoff system will stay at 4 teams for the entire 12 years of this deal? You can see it's set up to nicely flow into an 8 team playoff, which I believe will happen long before the whole thing comes up for renewal.
