Corsicana Daily News: Shimonek, Slalina big reasons two teams to play in 2A DII state title

MILDRED — — East Bernard coach Jerry Long can relate to the lap of luxury Mildred counterpart Patrick Harvell has lived in the last three years.

The same quarterback, fewer headaches.

Actually, East Bernard’s Ty Slanina started several games his freshman season, as did Mlidred’s Nic Shimonek. Both have had the position to themselves the last three years, and it’s as big a reason as any that Mildred (13-1) will play East Bernard (14-0) in the Class 2A Division II State Championship Game at 8 p.m. Thursday night at Cowboys Stadium.

"Starting at it early really helps," Harvell said. "It gives them a chance to get comfortable with the position. Nic struggled some as freshman, had a good sophomore year and gained the confidence to do what he's done as a junior and senior." ...

A very college football savvy friend of mine from East Bernard tells me that Ty Slalina is a very tough, great kid who is the real deal, and that any Horned Frog fan who can get to Cowboys Stadium tomorrow night is in for quite a treat to watch him. Remember: 4.31 forty. They play him everywhere.

Ty is going to bring so much to the game in coming years. Watching his videos he has each position down pat and when he's playing defense it looks like he is begging the receivers to at least run a little. Very versatile player and wonder if he has the chance his first year at TCU if he would be willing to change to defense?
