College teams and "putting players in the NFL"

A college team has a huge opportunity with recruits.. coach em up well enough and they will make the NFL, there's no doubt.

That said, much of "the league" is drafted out by size/weight. Many great college players on great teams don't get drafted because they're an inch too small or 15 pounds too light, regardless of how solid their stats were. Genetics are HUGE when it comes to getting drafted.

Just look at Kellen Moore as an example. Heck of a QB, tons of wins, low INTs, high # of TDs thrown, high football IQ, yet not even touched in the draft because he was short.

Would you say that it is Boise's fault that he didn't get drafted? I'd say it was Kellen's genes that kept him out of the league, not anything that Chris Petersen & Co did.

Couldn't you say the same about Baylor and the number of linemen they've had drafted the past few years? Not only were they coached well, they had the SIZE to make it into the NFL. Were they lacking the genes before committing to Baylor?

Just thinking that too many people say that a team is responsible for putting a player into the NFL when genes have a HUGE role in it as well. Some guys just won't ever be tall/large/fast enough to get there.

Flame away...

Baylor does it better than us right now. Is that the proper response?

If you mean to say that Baylor is doing a better job of getting kids with the right genes, then I agree. Briles is apparently an amazing recruiter.

Patterson can only coach the genes he has to work with.

If a kid's genes say he tops out at 6 ft and 280, thus too short and too light for the NFL, does that mean TCU is doing a bad job of getting kids into the NFL?

So we should swap Coach P with Briles since Briles can get us better talent on the field.

It means we need to recruit better. Take Kerley for example. He definitely SHOULD be too small, but he isn't. Does he get to the NFL through another program? I don't know. I think that the number of factors should be accounted for, but a few players we've been able to take at 3 star talent, judged by size, weight, and current skill, and put them into the NFL. Darryl Washington is another example. He was an OK recruit but now he's a top 3 ILB in the NFC. We've done a good job of taking players to their full potential, and that's all we can do.

In short, I just don't think you can fault a school for "not developing talent to the NFL" if their genes say they'll never be big enough.

If you wanna see the opposite, go check out how many NFL size kids Mack Brown has kept out of the league.

There's only one factor that should be accounted for...

I never said we don't develop talent to the NFL. I just said Baylor is better at it.

And LOLOLOLOL at the last comment bud. Go look and see how many UTaxes kids are playing at the next level. Didn't someone post a stat like that somewhere at some point today?

I don't see how you can say patterson is worse at developing NFL talent when he hasn't had enough kids with the right genes?

Are Baylor and Texas getting more kids with the right genes? Sure. It's a place where we need to get better, but I'm just saying you can't authoritatively say that Patterson isn't good at developing NFL talent when really he hasn't had the same chances. You need kids with the right genetic makeup.

I think you can fault our recruiting for not getting guys who have NFL measurables. It's by no coincidence that Alabama wins a lot of NCs, and the SEC in general wins a lot of games. I'm sure if you went and drew some type of graph that tracked: stars, college wins, NFL draft position that you would find a relatively strong correlation.

That is not to say that it is the only way to win college games and NCs, it's just the most proven way. Fortunately we have Patterson who develops talent better than anyone.

Bro that's the whole argument here. Everyone is getting their panties wadded up and super defensive for TCU about this recruiting thing. BayLOL/Taxes has landed guys with better NFL measurables. I never said Patterson can't develop kids.

If it weren't for Coach P's ability to do this, we'd be an extremely marginal program.

But *this* when it comes to the Bama comment.

I agree completely.

I'm just responding to some out there who think that Baylor "Develops" NFL talent better than TCU could.

Offensively they have done a better job not defensively. Phil Taylor is the only defensive player they have in the league.

I think we can all agree that Patterson (defensive minded) and Briles (offensive minded) are two different styles so I would expect Baylor to have more offensive players in the league.

Our past couple of senior classes have been down, NFL caliber wise.
