Hailey Van Lith sounds off on TCU’s ‘issue’ after K-State loss

TCU women’s basketball guard Hailey Van Lith didn’t shy away from calling out a recurring issue following the Horned Frogs’ 59-50 loss to No. 12 Kansas State on Wednesday night. Van Lith, who transferred to TCU this season, expressed frustration over the team’s inconsistency, particularly in handling aggressive, physical opponents.

“In all of our losses, we kind of had the same issue,” Van Lith said, as reported by Steven Johnson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “It’s not one person, we have a collective team issue. Coach says it to us all the time, it’s our hill we have to climb. When teams get aggressive and physical with us, sometimes we show up and sometimes we don’t.”

The ninth-ranked Horned Frogs struggled offensively in Manhattan, shooting under 40% from the field and turning the ball over 17 times, leading to 15 points for the Wildcats. TCU, which has averaged nearly 80 points per game according Avery Osen of the Associated Press, has failed to reach 55 points in all three of its losses this season.

“That inconsistency is starting to cost us some games,” Van Lith said. “We lost twice on the road, so clearly those environments are a red flag for us. As a leader, as a point guard, I need to help build some of my girls up and just get everybody confident in what they do.”

They are going to see the press more as teams scout them more. The short bench is going to make it tough on the legs in the 4th quarter to hit shots. They are going to need to capitalize on cheap buckets.
The fatigue of game-long backcourt pressure is real. I thought TCU handled the K-State pressure well after the first 5 minutes, but a couple of times in the second half they threw the ball away by rushing entry passes from mid-court.

K-State has a good backcourt trap, but they also recover well into their half-court D, which is one of the best in the country.

All 3 Frog losses have been to teams in the top 12 of defensive FG pct allowed.

The West Virginia game will be a good test. WV presses hard but they are just 73rd in defensive FG pct allowed. That suggests that transition buckets are possible if the Frogs keep their cool.

You make a good point that the Wildcats have one of the best defenses in the country. The good news is that not all teams are as good as the Wildcats with the press. Some will probably try but that does not mean it will work.

Way too early for this, but wondering who will be the HVL next year.
It looks set up to be Maddie Scherr, grad transfer who took a medical redshirt instead of playing her final season alongside HVL. She's not as much of a pure scorer as HVL, averaging 12 pts/5 boards/4 assists in two seasons at Kentucky. She came to TCU to showcase her skills in a WNBA-style offense.

But I think Donovyn Hunter could give Scherr a run for the role. She was floor general at Oregon State but has focused on defense this season because of HVL. I think she's got a gear on offense that is yet to be unleashed.

I think both have benefitted a ton from being around HVL this year.

After about the third time the KSU 6’1” guard took our guards within 5 feet of the basket for an easy turnaround jump shot, Campbell should have changed defense against her. We could not stop that play. Plus I think Prince’s personal problems are impacting her game. She needs to get her head straight. I can see her getting suspended right before the NCAAs and ruining it for the team.
